So, outline plans for a road trip have started again! I have a potential travel buddy, and started looking at the potential...

In a nutshell my partner is working in Dubai, and I have had a hankering to head there to visit her from UK as a road trip (and taking a month to travel there - probably freighting the bikes home).

The part from UK to Turkey (or Greece) is fine, I have done that before. But as we know there are significant restrictions after Turkey, as travel in Syria, Iran and Iraq are against UK Govt advice.

So.... I am thinking Ferry from Turkey (probably Iskenderun) to Egypt (ideally Port Said) - I know this ferry used to run, but appears to be suspended...
Second option would be Greece or Turkey to Cyprus (seems possible) but then it appears all ferries from Cyprus to Egypt are suspended ( https://www.ferries.gr/salamis/ )

Does anyone have a suggestion as to a way of transporting 2 bikes and riders from Turkey/Greece to Port Said or Jeddah? It would have to happen in April or early May 2024...

Hi Martin, I am looking to do a trip out to Turkey next September, how did yours go ? Oh and what route did you take. Cheers, Paul.

Hi, Paul. I've currently mothballed the trip, because of Port Said being so close to Israel, and the unrest in the area. Now planning Pyrenees on the same dates!

I failed to find a passenger ferry from Turkey or Greece to Port Said. There are a number of freight trips, and one option would be to put your bike on the boat (Maersk are just one company that ships freight still from Turkey to Egypt), and fly across. At the time of my research there did not seem to be an option to travel onboard the boat with the bike (or any vehicle). Details which may help you: https://www.maersk.com/local-information/europe/egypt

The "fixer" in Post #3 would have been my next bet after seeing in Maersk (or another carrier) could not help. He did say he could try to arrange something - if you're still serious about this I would contact him, as google has failed to find the answers for me! Local knowledge could be the answer... I am sure there will be smaller vessels doing the trip, but they may not have websites with up-to-date information?

Please post any findings on here - I may resurrect my plans!!! :)

Just re-read this Paul.
No I have not actually ridden a bike into Turkey yet. I have been right up close to the border on the Black Sea.
In April '22, 4 of us rode down through Italy, got the ferry from Bari to Igoumenitsa (Greece), rode across Greece to the Black Sea an then swung North through Transylvania and Czech Republic:

Happy to share more details if you like - the Vid is a snapshot :)

Thanks Martin, I am looking to travel to Antalya next September for a check up at the dentist I have been going to. There is a vlog on yutube of a guy doing the same trip, he got as far as the M25 and then turned back home it seems. I hope I get further than that ha ha.
I will look for your tour on YouTube later, I have seen a few routes but I want to take in a few detours on the way, my mate wants Vienna as 1 of them, I was hoping for croatia coastline but its a long way off course, we will see.
Coming back we was hoping to catch the ferry from Greece to Italy, if it is running. Hope you dont mind me picking your brains.

You do know we have Dentists in the Uk don’t you ?
The overnight service from Igoumenitsa to Bari is very good.

Ha ha ha can't get a dentist appointment around here.

Have a look at the superfast ferry website. That’s who we used and the crossing was fine. Left Greece 23.00 hrs and got to Bari at about 09.00 hrs. Make the booking early as cabin availability can be a problem if you leave it late.

We went down the SH8 ( I think it was called) down the east coast of the Adriatic as far as Greece. Had 3 nights in Lefkada/Kefalonia then back to Igoumenitsa for the ferry to Bari. From there a meandering route back via all sorts of places.
mileages…..varied. got from europort to Karlobag,Croatia in 3 days then the daily mileages got less.
other than the first 2 nights which we booked ahead all hotels where booked on the day on booking.com. best part of the trip was Albania, especially Logarro national park.

Did you ever get any further with your thinking on this? My BiL is in Abu Dhabi and I was thinking of a similar route as you. Turkey - Egypt, across the Red Sea to Saudi - Emirates. I'd have thought 2 weeks would have covered it, but I was counting on a Turkey - Egypt ferry too!

Horribly expensive carnet required for Egypt - something like 4 or even 8 x value

Sadly, I didn't. My girlfriend has now finished her contract and now back in UK. An opportunity missed sadly.... If you do go, please let us know how you get on ..
