Ferry option to Gijon.

LD lines are now offering a once a week service to Gijon.

Just checked - a return to Poole with an outside cabin for two in early August priced out at £382.

Might be a consideration if your touring Galicia or Northern Portugal.

I've sailed from Gijon before. Port facilities are acceptable.
 
I sailed on the Norman Asturias last year from St Nazaire down to Gijon. The boat is fine and typical of a lot of very similar layout ferries out there. The facilities weren't at all spectacular but comfortable enough. One thing though- the two bed inside cabin we had was of a proper size- not bunks, and comfortable enough to spend time in unlike the ridiculously small bunked cabin on the Brittany Pont Aven akin to Harry Potter's cupboard under the stairs.
 
The chair worked for me

Used it in September one way from Gijon to St Nazaire. I opted for the Pullman chair and was surprised how comfy it was . It helped matters that most of the occupants of the chairs were also interested in getting a nights rest. Its a handy way of getting up from the Costa Verde to the Cote D' Amour while sleeping . I think my fare was around the 80e for bike and rider on a chair one way. It would have cost me this to ride up . I understand that the chairs book out early and the cabin prices for a solo rider can be a little ching ching ...

I booked just before Xmas.£160 return including 4berth inside cabin .Difference in price over BrittanyFerries is enough to pay my petrol costs for the whole 10 day trip and a couple of nights in a hotel.

What is the food quality like? Usual DFDS high prices on board?
What's the arrangement for securing bikes? On Newcastle-IJmuiden there are always plenty ratchet straps to use.
 
Just cancelled my BF booking from Plymouth to Santander @ £592 (Bike and 1 with out side cabin)........


...and rebooked with LD lines for £160.....!!! (Bike and 1 with inside cabin)...:eek::eek:

No Brainer really...the difference almost covers the rest of the trip as I'am camping...:thumby:

I went on the St Nazaire/Gijon in 2011.
Didn't pre-book just turned up at the ferry terminal. Had a chat with a nice lady at the reception and asked if any deals going and she said she'd give me HGV drivers regular use discount, 80e me and the bike with a cabin.
She went to book me in then announced no 2 berth cabins left only 4 berth and they're extra... another 4e. :D Did the same coming back.

On the LD lines St Nazaire/Gijon bikes on last and the crew secure the bike.

Food was excellent, crossing was full of spanish truckers who do like their food so they can't dish up the usual fried crap that the english like.
 
Have booked 2 bikes 2 riders and 2 4 berth cabins inside for a one way trip 27th of may, came to £160, cant grumble really its a no brainer at £80 each, dont know why we have the 4 berth cabins.
 
Good grub

We've crossed both ways on the St.Nazaire to Gijon route and found the grub excellent:thumb - its nothing flash, there's just one dining area with a choice of four or so mains etc - but very nice and very reasonable prices - even for a bottle of wine:jager
As said elsewhere, cabins are also very good.

Iam booked for the same crossing....but work have reneged on my leave due to clash of timings....Bugger :blast

Spoke to LD lines and they have allowed to me to re-book for the first 2 weeks in Sept...FOC.....can't ask for fairer than that.

Gijon hmm remember it well from last years trip! 1 bottle of wine and many scanky ciders and woke up naked in a park! Then rolled on to la coruna! Gijon was great good lantern night of trip instead of first!!
 
We've procrastinated too long :banghead: Price for one way is now £180 for our planned July crossing for 1 bike and 1 rider banghead: Brittany Ferries into Santander is only £1 more expensive.
