I've a last minute opportunity for a trip to the alps at the end of this week. Has anyone just turned up at Dover/Folkestone and managed to get straight onto a boat or train at a reasonable price?

I'm unsure if I'm leaving Friday or Saturday yet so it's a bit difficult to pre-book.

The Friends & Family deal I posted earlier is done by telephone and then a reference number is given so you do not have to wait for a ticket.

Ferry turn up

I think it is worth a call to pay and get the ref. no. so you do not have to hang around at the port.. When booking by phone you could mention MCN for some extra discount with P&O?
As a rule you can book, then turn up late or early and you will get on the next available ship. However if you get special rates for anti social travel hours you will pay extra to travel at peak times/
If you travel from Brignorth you might need an over night stay near the port. I think it would be cheaper to cross over to France on an evening crossing and find a guest house/small hotel in the Pas de Calais. Then you are ready for an early start.
good luck & reagards,
Barrie.

I'm with Barrie on this. As I live 200 miles from Dover I've done both. Dover is a real dump and not somewhere I like staying. My preference is a late afternoon ferry which gives you a nice rest after travelling across the UK. Then, blast 80-100 miles down the Autoroute and stay in Arras (Ibis hotel in the centre-ville, Formel1 on the N39 Cambrai Road but quite a distance from centre-ville) or Cambrai.

That 100 miles away from the Channel means that the Alps are easily reachable the next day (430 miles to Konstanz or Annecy by Autoroute)

You can check availability & prebook IBIS and F1 hotels via www.accorhotels.com
