Allihies again.. but off to Asia soon....
Tom did the Irish leaving cert this year even though he did not go to an Irish school or follow the Irish curriculum, (long story) any way he will get his points on the fifteenth, meanwhile he has already been accepted for a "music management course" which would take two years for Fetac levels 5 + 6. As some of you know he is very keen on his music.

Out of interest, what is that worth (FETAC I mean)?

He has also applied for Astrophysics at the UCC but does not think he will get enough points. At the moment he is delighted to know he can do the music management course, but I have a sneaky suspicion that if he gets better points than he imagines he could change his mind.

Fetac 5 / 6 is the equivalent of a 'diploma' - so, not even a basic degree, so not good enough for teaching at any decent level.
i know this because the RoSPA DIP. (Advanced Motorcycle instruction) is vieved as the same level.

hth. :nenau

Good Luck to him whatever he does. :thumb2

But, if he then carries on can he start a degree course with a credit allowing him to finish a degree is two years?

I have looked but can't seem to find anything

Richie,
it is a confusing minefield, mostly with a lack of information as far as i can see.
fwiw - Waterford Institute of Technology seem to do a lot of business with FETAC - i had a quick skim of their website but, sorry - i dont have the time to look properly. Maybe you will find more info there?

W.I.T. worked on the accreditation of the RoSPA DIP. for A.D.I.* purposes - that's how i know.

*A.D.I = Approved Driving Instructor.

Geraldine was on the FETAC standards committee so I'll ask her to give you some info

My son did not get enough points to get his course choice in DCU. He did a fetac course and as a result DCU gave him a place the next year, so it appears it can open back doors into college sometimes.

PS.... The same son is now in the med on a yacht getting paid a fortune to race  I hope he appreciates his privelaged life.

Hi Richie

That son of yours is doing great but I am not surprised, as you say he probably will get more points than he thinks.

FETAC and the higher level HETAC are a framework where all courses are placed so that standards can be compared. If you log into FETAC you will see the About FETAC and then you can go onto National Framework of Qualifications

http://www.nfq.ie/nfq/en/FanDiagram/nqai_nfq_08.html

to see how the system works.

It is true that higher level courses will show what prior learning they will recognise and credit to enter them.

My daughter did a Diploma course in Business in DIT, then she was accepted on a degree course but has had to do three years. It allowed her be eligible for exchange student programme and so she went to Argintina for a year.

If he plots out what will give him the credits to the next level he is interested in there is always a way to get what he wants in the end.

Hi Richie,

I've just completed a Fetac Level 6 course in "Science & Good Manufacturing Practice" and have been accepted in the degree course to be run 3 nights a week over two years.

It's a good stepping stone and a slightly different route to the degree!

(It'll be really useful to me at 56!:confused:)

As all tossers know.....There are many paths to the top of the hill but we still get there!

Regards.
