Well I have just taken my shiney new Dell Vostro PC out of its box and after all of about 8-10 minutes its set up and here is my first post on it.
I now need to transfer all the old files from my previous PC onto this one and was wondering if there is a preferred file stucture to use. Previously I just had a directory call Andy hanging of C:\drive but was wondering if I should store it anywhere in particular?? Always best to get it right at first.

I need to set up all my eamila ccounts and other programs, printers. wireless stuff tomorrow so that will be interesting.......not:(

Anyway, all pointers and suggestions greatly welcomed.

many thanks

What's wrong with Andy as a top level folder and then have sub-folders for specific reasons? Is that what you are asking?

On my PC at home and at work I use sub folders of My Documents for different needs keeps all the stuff in one place and easy to find.

You can build yr file structures any way that you want. Best to call yr files names that are meaningful to you so that you can fnd what you want. It's best to leave the my documents, my pictures etc as they are because a lot of programmes will use them as defaults.

My preference is to partition the HDD into:

C: Operating System
D: Applications
E: Files 1
F: Files 2

I use one of the software partitioning applications for this. It allows you to alter the size of the partitions as required, later - and means that if you have to format the C: partition - everything else remains as is (although, if you haven't a registry back-up - you would need to re-install all your applications)

Thanks guys,
it all sounds straight forward. I seem to recall my Brother in Law (Chief I.T. Geek) saying something about he saved all his info under a directory such as Andys Documents which is straight off My Computer in Explorer. I always had a directory called Andy under C:\drive. I've got an large external drive and was going to set it to back up each other just in case as I don't want t loose all my pics.

Thanks again.

Everything goes in one folder here - I use Search to find stuff.

HDD1

C: Windows + apps.

D: My Docs.

HDD2

E:

F: Acronis backups of C and D. also backed up on external drive too.

bolloxed windows or anything on HDD1: restore from backup in 10 minutes

I like Blackal and Cookies' suggestion of making new partitions on the HDD first and keeping all of the applications on the C drive. It keeps everything simple for the and un-cluttered.
