Hi,

Don't think this has been raised before, but I just found this on a French list which I frequent:

Extract from the french motorcycle press:

The verdict is set in stone. The Ministry of Transport has decided that filtering between lanes of traffic is a prohibited practice.

"Riding between traffic lanes is a grey area in legal terms" explained Catherine Herviou, legal co-ordinator for the French Motorcycle Federation, "so the police are now interpreting certain traffic rules in order to stamp out the practice. On trunk roads and motorways, filtering has recently been classified as undertaking, which attracts a 135 euro fine, three penalty points and a possible ban of up to three years. It is clear that filtering urgently needs to be given a proper legal status"

Filtering has always been tolerated by french motorists, albeit subject to sporadic law enforcement. In June, the CRS nicked over 60 riders who were filtering on the A4 motorway outside Paris. In response, around 400 local bikers staged a hour long demonstration at a nearby motorway toll booth, holding up the barriers and handing out protest information leaflets to 4,000 motorists who were then able to go through without paying.

The demo organisers explained "If filtering was made fully legal, it could be incorporated into driver/rider training. That way, drivers would take more notice of the presence of bikes and riders would learn to ride more carefully between traffic lanes.

Various propositions have been put forward, from riders who reckon that 50km/h between lanes must be practical, to training schools who feel that any speed differential between bikes and cars should not exceed 20km/h.

The transport ministry has received all of these propositions but prefers to preserve the current vague legal situation, an attitude which has satisfied no-one.

I can't see how they could enforce this in Paris though - they would never be able to catch all those loopy scooterists and R1 riders wearing jeans and T shirts!

Cheers

Roger

This has been ongoing for quite some time now. It has always been illegal but tolerated. But then there are always asses who overtake/filter in areas where you just shouldn't....

Anyway, there are a couple of protest runs programmed, so guess they'll block all Paris traffic for a day or two and then the government will say, OK, you win....

For those who don't know what Trotsky is talking about, watch the new Clio advert here: http://www.renaulttv.co.uk/main.php

I was in Paris 2 weeks ago and was pleased to see the behaviour of motorists in the left lane on the peripherique who drove close to the central barrier so that the hundreds of filtering bikes could get past. Personally I like filtering, but it is a skill that needs to be refined - something I don't think the scooterists in London, for example, have learned that well.

Yeah, usually I'm 50 km faster than the current traffic. I put on my blinkers and sometimes even high beem.

Almost all French move out of the way, the problem are always the foreigners.... they don't know the rules of the game....

I ride my GS into London every day (and back). M25 then A2 etc etc. I arrive at work at an office building shared by a bank which has an employee that comes in from Rochester on a Vespa. We overtake each other half a dozen times each on the way in, he has taught me a lot about the handling capabilities of a scooter. As well as the limitations.

Would rather have him for company than the Suzuki SV1000 (wave past, then get stuck behind), Yamaha R1 (waits for the move to let him past, waits a week, then passes as fast and as close as possible), Honda 'one hand on my knee' (cause I am so cool at 100mph through stationary traffic) CBR 600, and the Adventure (I will not be passed by you under any circumstances even if you have picked a better lane/route through the traffic).

If you think the guys on the periperique are insane, you should sample the A2 between the M25 and Blackwall Tunnel (and vice versa).

But it aint the scooters doing stupid speeds/manoevres in between (through) the traffic.

Bloke at work said he moved over for bikes.
I remarked that it was awfully decent of him.
He said that he didn't want his door mirrors knocked orf...........

Please behave guys?

It's the way the French bikers "conditioned" the car drivers !!
