Hi all,

Has anyone tried swapping the final drive of a 850 (37/11) with one from a 1100 (33/11) ?
My 850 is a bit buzzy at motorway speeds and maybe the taller gearing might solve this.
On the other hand, is the 850 powerful enough to handle this ?

Cheers,
Patrick

A few guys who regularly offroad their GS have fitted the 850 bevel box to make it more usable,so you wont have any problem selling your box if you need to;but you may find that the 1100s ratio may mean that you wont be able to pull top very well and it will compromise acceleration. It'll make the 850 into a relaxed motorway cruiser though.

Bevel boxes

This should be a good mod, I've put an 1100 box on my 1150 GS with great results. Gets rid of that high bottom gear and is magic in traffic. I put an 850 box on first but this was too low, even for off roading as some others have found, unless your doing trials!. Try it and see doent take long and when you've done it a few times it's a peice of P.... to do. yiou'll soon sell it on if it's wrong. I put mine on for a trip last year, 21000 miles and it was great, top speed seems unaffected and fuel consumption does improve with TT panniers on the back! helps overcome the "air brake" effect!. But traffic work in heavy traffic is great also ideal for mountain roads and hairpins, no clutch required at all !. so DO IT.

Good to hear of your experiences with the 33/11 ratio. I've one of these sitting in my shed that I plan on fitting to my R1150GS. Slipping the clutch at low speed has always been a pain ... seems this mod will eliminate that?

My 1150 has the the lower ratio top gear not the overdrive, has anyone fitted the 1100 diff with this gearbox? Just wondered how much higher reving top would be.

i'll read the replys next but my opinions is yes. A lot of the bits on my 99 r85x are compatible on my 1150gsa, so I expect the 11's would be similar.
