Final drive bearing collapse.

Final drive replaced.

Williams pulled out all the stops and replaced my final drive in record time. It seems the bearing failure took out the disc, brake caliper and caliper frame, because all have been renewed, even the pads, which had only been replaced a month before.
I still await news from BMW regarding my goodwill claim.

I got a result from BMW/SPC, they were gracious enough to grant a replacement rear drive to be fitted as a goodwill gesture. There is difficulty in getting the tooling to undo the bearing housing so to prevent unnecessary delays they will do it as soon as I can get it booked in.

Thank you BMW/SPC, another satisfied customer. :)

Good to know it's being sorted to your satisfaction :thumb

An update on my wheel bearing failure.
BMW have agreed to pay for all parts and labour as a goodwill gesture.
Credit where credit is due.
I just hope I get more than 15,000 miles out of the new final drive/disc/caliper.
But the question remains, did BMW have a fault with the first batch of rear drives, and is it now sorted and improved.
Until this question is answered, I doubt I'll be buying another BMW in the future. :bounce1

Serious clunk in transmission sorted

Any idea what they did to sort this, mine is terrible and they just keep saying it's a boxer feature but I know my mates RT1200 doesn't do it half so much as my GS?

So, what would you do - keep one that seems fine (so far) or swap for a new one in 6 months time that *may* go tits up after a relatively mileage (or may not?) :nenau

swap it for a new one ASAP, - if the part is not available at the end of the warranty you may not get it changed under warranty.

I have a part that the dealer has agreed is warranty, (the front plate to the gearbox where the paint has peeled off directly behind the front wheel), but my dealer made the comment that it would be warranty as long as the part was available before my warranty ran out, - although I should add that I would be happy to take them on if they did reject the claim.

This has all got me thinking.........

My bike is currently on 20,000 miles and the paint has started to 'craze' on the final drive.

My dealer offered to replace it under warranty but part of me thought FFS it's only a (minor) cosmetic defect that seems a bit daft and half of me thought, hang on 'till the end of the warranty and then get a new one, thereby maximising my mileage out of the current one. So I said I'd keep an eye on it and, if it got any worse, would take them up on their offer.

I had my FD changed under warranty due to the paint peeling off and now the replacement is starting to fail. Probably the wrong chaoice now in hindsight.

1200 gs final drive failures

I am on my third diff one failed oil seal at 26000, one failed oil seal at 45000, last one has been ok now bike has done 101000 miles.
My mates rear drive was replaced under warranty 7 months [4000 miles] ago and bearings have gone 2 weeks ago, bmw replaced bearings[i would have thought a 7 month old rear drive would still be under warranty] then major oil seal failure last weekend, oil covered the wheel tyre, disc, pads etc,not to mention it could have killed him on the way to Wales for bank holiday, bike recovered and seal replaced, he is not happy, but apart from that have a nice day

Rear Drive Diagrams

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My mates outer rear drive seal leaked today and had to be recovered for the second time in a week
This is on a rear drive with less than 7000 miles and 8 months old, replaced under warranty[bike has only done 22000 total]
It had new bearings/seals fitted last week and the oil dumped allover the back wheel/Tyre/disc/pads and bike fully loaded, it could have killed him,
Recovered, fucked up bank holiday weekend, Replaced seal and had to go back 5 miles later as oil covered brake pads left on oil covered disc, trying to kill him I am sure,
replaced pads and 5 days later and 30 miles later it has done the same again, Fucked up another day out,Recovered again to say he is unhappy or happy to be alive ,don't know which

Great milage 100k plus. Post some pictures of your bike.:thumb

2005 1200
FD replaced @ 13k miles
FD Replaced again @ 22k miles

2008 1200GSA
FD replaced @ 11k miles

There's no known problem with the FD:augie

My 2005 GS has 50k miles, replaced outer RHS seal due small seepage, but otherwise, no prob.

Do you get told the cause of the drive failure when they replace it?

And me!

My 05 1200 has also just turned 50k with no problems(touchs wood),

There is some side to side play on the input shaft, but its quiet when spun so Im just gonna carry on:thumb2

2004 1200 gs with 21000 on the clock fd bearings grumble like fook on cornering, had fd checked (in sarf lundun) told fd ok due to the fact that it has the "standard" 1mm of play, but it grumbles like fook when cornering.
purchased a used fd from "motorworks" when fitted and rd tested was found to be "marginally worse" than the one that came off. been told by mh motorcycles (the ONLY place to take your beemer) that this is a VERY common fault and thats why they were modified.....twice!once the bearings grumble they mark the cw and pinnion its a write off as far as unit goes. bmw wont repair them pointless anyone repairing them so £900 thank you very much!
no more bmw for me ta!

.Do you get told the cause of the drive failure when they replace it?

yea, they are made of cheap crap, and made badly at that!
the play allowed in the bevel box is 2mm,AND it could well have come out the factory in that shoddy condition. this is ALL the stealer i went to would check, nothing else, no road test ,nothing. i was told to drive the road, take a bend ,quite hard. and dip the clutch, if you can hear a grumble or feel it through the seat.....ta ta £900!!

Just a little tip.
Make sure you pay a little "Customer contribution" and keep the receipt.Maybe £100 would do.That way you will have a 2 year warranty on your new final drive:thumb

The reason i know these things is cause my old 06 GSA had 4 final drives in 52000 miles
Every 13000 miles i needed a new one.First 3 where replaced in warranty/good will.Only the last one ,where i thought i paid customer contribution(but unfortunatly the dealer put it through as payment for a part:eek:) did BMW refuse to help.If i would have had proof of "CC" i would have had another free one.
Sent my old one of to wales for a refurb and then sold the bike
