Final drive needed for 06 R1200GSA

bike started leaking oil on the rear hub, sent in to bike shop to discover the seal, bearing and finalk drive needs to replaced due to a grooves in the final drive. Does anyone know where i can get a second hand final drive, or have one spare :aidan

waiting for motorworks to get back
 
If the final drive you have is scrap, are you gonna sell it?

If by "grooves in final drive" you mean splines, the drive shaft splines may also be toast.

For options talk to Mikeyboy. Also check the drive shaft U/Js. My FD end joint was stiff either side of its normal running range = knackered. Though, the front end (swing arm end) was fine.
 
I have a couple of FD's I know one of them is good.
I will dig them out. Its time for me to have a clearout of Hexhead stuff

It's not just about getting the bolts off. The case has to be heated to 100C to get the bearings out/in.
The oil stinks so don't use the kitchen oven.
Rebuild has to be correctly shimmed.
Chances are the driveshaft UJs are failing. Another jig needed for that.
Not to mention the external trunnion bearings usually shot because needle rollers fail when they move only a few degrees each way.
I do most stuff myself but on this one the experience of people like Mikeyboy or Steptoe is well worth their very reasonable charges.

whatever you said above.... I'm sure the guys at BMW (maddocks) will know what to do... wish i knew
 
BMW are unlikely to rebuild the final drive or the drive shaft. New or rebuilt, expect some considerable costs.

I have just worked out where you are. Investing in tools, oven and special fixture could be well worth the expense.

Low mileage parts via eBay are probably your best option.

they were an official BMW shop, but now not. they are looking for a second hand one and to rebuild, just need to find a second hand one ;)
 
Get the drive shaft checked. Mine had failed at the back end. It's a narrow angle turn so likely the needle rollers have flatted off.
If the FD splines are worn drive shaft is probably similar.
