I was getting a rusty water witness mark from the outer bearing on my final drive pivot. No sign of any wear but I thought I'd investigate.

It turns out the outer was smooth and feels okay, although I'll replace it anyway.

As for the inner, needle roller bearing:

I don't think a bit of grease smeared around it will do it!

Has anyone experience of removing old and installing new bearings? I know the casing needs heating and I can do that. If not I'll outsource it to a local engineering shop.

have something similar on a Guzzi drive box , except it has more meat around it .
if you are lucky , an internal bearing puller will do it ( but this is a bit risky if it is on an "ear " of alli.
OR ....safest way
a Dremel with a cutting disc , and cut the race out in a spiral . it will be brittle and break off , bit by bit.

can you get behind it , in a straight line ?

if so a spare pair of hands to hold it , get it hot , correct size drift ( read socket )supported properly , and knock it out .

someone with more know-how will be along in a minute , to make me look stupid .

I tried heating the surround of the needle bearing to 90 + degrees and tapping it out but no joy. I took it along to my local ‘old school’ bike shop and a couple of hours later it was done. £20. I’ll rebuild tomorrow when the correct grease arrives. Fitting Remus headers too.
I’ve had the bike nearly 10 years from new and it’s been brilliant. It’s got too many miles on it to sell it and it does all I need.

Did them on my 2014 1200GSA when it was less than 3 years old , made up a set of spacers with a threaded rod to pull the old ones out and get the new ones in , dealership at the time said they had a number fail on 2013 to 2016 bikes at the 12,000 mile mark due to a lack of lubrication from the factory

Mine could have been shot for a while. There was no play and no visible evidence of corrosion. I’ll be using high spec marine grade grease on reassembly.
