Hi Guys

Is there a way to check the oil level in the final drive on a gs1200 2007 ?

How do i check how much oil do i have inside?

Thanks

Just changed mine on an 06. As above (drain and refil).

Straightforward job, but I found refitting the rubber gaitors awkward (getting them to seat right) and the worst bit.

Mine has a drain plug so got drained after a ride and filled with 220ml. I reasoned (a little bit) too much is better than not enough. No problems with leaks and the bearing has some (within tolerance) side play.

Seeing the state of Patzx pinion nose bearing made me go a bit high rather than a bit low.

BMW used to say 200ml but revised it down because excess oil might have caused seals to fail. Ive never yet seen a gearbox oil seal fail due to a little too much oil. Filling to the brim would of course be harmful because the oil churns and heats up. But we are a long way from that state of affairs

I was prepared to take a chance on some seal seepage but it's since done 10K miles of all types of use including long motorways rides with no problems.

Gearbox is completely different setup. FD is sealed other than the twin cams and has a small volume of air. When it all gets hot the expansion causes too much pressure which blows out the seal. Reducing the oil volume was an attempt to have a bigger air volume so more spring as the oil expands.

That's the theory anyway and why BMW reduced the oil volume.

Interestingly they never increased the oil volume after adding a breather in the twin cams.

It's not a pumped/circulating system, so IWHT that as long as there is enough oil in there to ensure plenty gets slung around inside, the actual level/volume is not particularly important.

there are a lot of talks about using 75w90 castrol long life or castrol syntrax limited slip 75w140.

What do you guys use?

Castrol Syntrax is the BMW recommend oil for my '08 and has been used for the life of the bike at 36K. I change it every 6K and have had no issues that I'm aware of.

Yes but both of them are syntrax - 75w90 and 75w140. Which one?

Thicker oil lasts longer I'd've thought ?
I researched on forums 75/140 is the better stuff to use some say it's good for gearbox too making changes super smooth not tried it yet :thumb2

They all get thinner with use so just change it more frequently. If its an early bike the regular paralever bearing greasing will help them to last much longer as well. Those of us with later bikes have to make a special effort to do them at the same time.
