I have a serious oil leak, just got home from 110 mile ride, slowed up with rear brake onto the drive & it did not seem very effective so went out with a torch and the rear wheel is covered in gear oil & dripping off the brake disc, lucky to make it back , nothing in the haynes manual, any ideas? is it an oil seal ?? .

Taz, it sounds like the rear output bearing is about to let go on your 1150.

Get the bike on the centre stand and lift the rear wheel and check for excessive play.

The whole kit (bearing and oil seal) will cost you about £55 and with some mechanical knowledge is quite easy to do if you take your time :thumb

Thanks paul , will pull it apart after work tommorow, its leaking too bad to ride it far otherwise i would run it up to Neils place, i will give spc a call tommorow hope they have a kit in .

Taz,

Also check the gearbox oil level, it could be the out-put shaft oil-seal and the oil may have come down inside the shaft housing.

I hope this question is appropriate, but a friend sent me this link because of
debate on the reliability of BMWs.

This was a bit of a surprise as I was under the impression that the 1100s
were nigh on indestructable.
The start of the thread shows a picture of flames coming from the seal on the
final drive.
