Is it 180ml of final drive oil on the new 1250gs ?

Thanks. I'm just going to check the drive shaft boot and splines for grease.

Right , did it after work tonight. Firstly there was a bit of grey gunge on the magnet when i drained the final drive but no big filings. Proberbly no more than i expected. The spines were dry and didn't want to come apart easily and kept popping the locating ring off at the drive end but came off eventually. As you can see from the pictures there was slight rusting on the splines but no signs of water in the tunnel. So a good grease up with spline grease and assembly grease and the job's a goodun.
While i was on i checked the rear wheel for balance as there were no weghts on and it was 12g out.

Looks like 3 years and 20K..... and this is a new bike FFS!... not good!! should be okay now with the grease :)

After all the threads about rusty splines over the last year or so, and BMW are still sending out new bikes with no grease on the splines. It’s penny pinching at best, but the reality is they don’t give a monkeys, while people still keep buying them.

No it's not good but i enjoy riding it so much i just think sort it and move on. :thumb

What grade/spec oil is in the FDs on the LCs, is it the same as the old hex heads?

My thoughts exactly.

Did you put white lithium grease all over the shaft knuckles? It'll rust there as well.

Next time you might want to plan a couple of days to pull the shaft out completely, and repaint it. Doesn't have to look pretty, just paint it with all metals primer and Hammerite.

Stick it back in with your own personal message written on it :D haha

I wrote 'Don't worry, be happy'

But it'll be interesting if you pick lyrics from your favourite song and write it on it..... like posting a message in a bottle for the future :D

Service?

I was told that they changed the rear drive shaft oil on my 1250 at the 600 service and that was part of why it was £100

could you do a photo thread to show the rest of us how to do it?
And how do you check the wheel balance?

Thanks for the post, but worrying that there's that amount of corrosion so soon

It takes less that 5 minutes and only needs two screws undoing....

180 ml of Gear Oil would cost about £2 and the washer and rubber seal cost about £2
