I have just had the final drive and wheel replaced.., after waiting almost 5 weeks for a new wheel!
My bike had covered 4,300 miles.

Just sold our demo with 10500 miles on the clock and had no problems with it. None of the machines we have sold have had this problem but one of our techs was at Rockingham last week and there was talk of a few. We have been told to keep our eyes open for any but it seems it is not across the board.

How were you told? Was there a service bulletin or anything?

12,000+ trouble-free miles on mine...

Failed final drive.

Mine statrted at 3050 miles, 2000 miles later still waiting for carriage for disk to fit with final drive now in stock, but BMW (not dealer who has been great including providing alternative bike whilst mine off road)cocked up order so bike now in dealers awaiting rest of parts as told not to ride bike until fixed due to play in rear wheel.

There was an advisory sent round to check for free play when the machines were in for service. Like I said we have found none so far.

No service bulletin, just noticed a wobble coming out of corners when I was in France, the play at the rim was only 5mm or so.
God knows how some owners never noticed when their play was more than an inch!
It seems suspicious that my BMW dealer had a complete final drive unit waiting on the shelf.. Which only fits the GS, a bike that was only launched less than six months ago...
The wheel was the problem, BMW insist that it's replaced at the same time, but there are no spare ones in the UK. They pinched one of a new (ordered) GS that came in to the dealers earlier than expected.
Other probs that were fixed at the same time, was the fuel guage and injection mapping.
Have any other owners got a solution for the annoying windscreen vibration when pulling hard under load?

I cured the screen vibration on mine by removing the two front mounting pivots and sliding a small O ring onto each of the stems (they are about O-ring chain sized O rings).
When replacing the screws you may find you have to push the pivots into the mounting to line the screws up, but this gives it just enough tension to stop the bloody thing from vibrating, and it doesnt affect the ability to adjust the screen. :D

The limit is no more than 1 mm. 5 is way to much!
