Final drive rebuild by Mikeyboy

Because its the single roller bearing that supports the rear of the bike on the wheel? If it breaks up at speed what happens? :nenau OK maybe it wasn't the bearing but I'm pretty sure it wasn't the wheel bolts.

I will try to find out more and will report back, probably no sooner than August.

Honda VFR has a complex motor with two heads tucked away inside a tightly-packed frame. Its always going to cost a lot to get the valves checked.

Problem 1 - the bolts are lubricated and unscrew themselves
Problem 2 - at the correct torque, the bolts get overtightened due to being better lubricated and the threads strip.

Thread lock can also cause problem 2 because it lubes the threads.

Isnt life simple.

I use a proper quality anti seize paste and dont fully trust a torque wrench. How often to we read of threads stripped at the "correct" torque. There is probably a formula to use for lubricated threads to correctly reduce the torque setting.

Edit: Here's one that says reduce the torque by 13% for M12 and M16 threads

Coppaslip is okay if you use a "smidgeon" on the end of the threads

No slather them from one end to the other !

Most importantly NO copperslip on the cones The taper on taper is what locates the wheel and with "in and around" the "correct" torque between the two faces

The Bolts don;t unscrew!

After it has stripped, just back it off half a turn..simples:augie

I watched someone use a correctly set torque wrench....after it clicked, he wound it round a bit more....'just to be sure'

I know it's an old trick, but I always dab a spot of red nail varnish on the bolts and corresponding dabs on the wheel. That way any movement is easy to spot :thumb2

Can a failed bearing really cause a wheel to come off? :nenau

Lets just say that You have gone past your teeth being pressed to fall out with vibration and perhaps some spine compression once the balls can start chasing each oother around and you get vertical movement too

It isn;t nice when you are nursing one home but seriously You'd need to be a first degree numpty to keep driving when the FD bearing starts playing up The Vibs are unreal !

I use the sparkly nail varnish for the bling effect:D

Not too keen on the idea of wheels coming off so that's reassuring, cheers :thumb2

Flash bugger :D

Got told off years ago by SPC for using a hint of Coppaslip on rear wheel bolt threads. Always fitted dry since.

Just as an aside, I was told by a mechanic in Thailand that he'd heard of rear wheels coming off beemers and he thought that was the reason they added a fifth bolt for the R12. I've always, rightly or wrongly, slipped some locktite onto my 1150 bolts for peace of mind and the ol' nail varnish indicator has never let me down :thumb2

My 1150gs has about 60k on it. There's no play in the wheel, but would you gents recommend replacing the FD bearing as a precautionary measure? My feeling is to let her run until I feel anything nasty happening, but if people with greater knowledge/experience than me feel otherwise I'd really like to know...

Cheers :thumb2

all this moaning! if you dont like the bikes then bugger off and get something else!

Why don't you take your comment and bugger yourself off.

The BMW R1200GS is about the best bike in the world but as people have pointed out BMW are expensive to maintain and there are MANY problems that BMW just don't seem to address.

Agreed about the basic checks, but have you any more details about the cause of your friend's failure? Was this final drive collapse/bearing failure/puncture/loose wheel bolts? What?
Alan R

Update: I have been told it wasn't his rear wheel bearing, it was the brake caliper that came off into the spokes causing the wheel to collapse.

Get well soon chap :(

Bugger Something to be said for pre ride checks!!!
