Final drive rebuild

I have heard of a few people doing final drive rebuilds for the 1200.Can anyone tell me who does it for the best price.Also is there an exchange rebuild service anywhere?

I think most dealers will do it at about £300 I believe.

i can do it for you,i strip,clean and inspect the fd,replace every bearing ,seal and o ring,i also fit a new set of casing bolts.£350 plus post.it would be difficult to do an exchange service as the condition of them varies, you would not be happy to receive an fd that was scratched and corroded if the one off your bike was mint,turn around is normally 3 to 5 days .mike

the retail cost of parts is @£250 i dont think a dealer is going to remove ,strip,clean and refurb(a job which done properly will take about 3 to 4 hours) for £50

Thats probably just for the bits that need replacing. Mine was done under warranty last year. They only replaced crown wheel bearings and seals as the ones for the pinion were OK as far as they were concerned.
Mikeyboy is offering a full refurb which sounds like very good value.

No... He did admit that it takes 4+ hours to do the job.However Bmw do not allow 4 hours they only give him 2 or 2.5 I can't remember which. I don't profess to know exactly what they do or how they do it. I'm just quoting the price he gave.Mike at Cardiff Motorrad quoted £400.I'm only paying £100 as a contribution because the bike is out of warranty, but by doing that they will give me a 2year warranty on the parts, which for me is another 25k miles
Mikeyboys £350 sounds like a great deal!

Just heard from brian (bsogri) and he said he could rebuild with all new bearings and seals for £240 plus postage.Sounds like a bargain.

Just had my final drive on my 2007, 1200 GS rebuilt by mikeyboy of this site.
I was very impressed with Mike’s service, the attention to detail and with all the information provided upfront in answer to all my questions.
The total cost was £350 for the parts and labour + the postage which was £15 each way, and the work was done within a week.
The price quoted by the dealer to replace the whole unit was over £1000 when I took my 21K miles bike for an annual and was told the final drive had gone and the bike was not really safe to ride. Not what you expect when you only budget for a service.... Not for a bike of that mileage either... As luck has it I didn’t renew my extended warranty last year.
I took the fd unit off myself and fitted it back. The most difficult part was removing the bottom bolt holding the unit to the chassis. It is loctited (which I didn’t know at the time...) and unless it is heated it requires a lot of brute force to undo. It was a lot easier to fit it back on.
All in all I was very pleased with the work done by Mike and to have the bike back on the road at a more reasonable price.

Hello

My RT went clunkety clunk, rattled for a short while (whilst I went from lane 3 to the hard should of the M25 at 5.00pm), locked up and slid to a halt.

Back wheel will not turn now but it does cycle through the gears with the motor running - as soon as the clutch is released it stalls.

Anyone know if this sort of failure is rebuild-able or am I looking for a s/h unit? I'd rather rebuild than buy a s/h of unknown origin.

There are far more GS ones about s/h - what's the possibility of using one?

Riders in Cardiff £307 quoted last week

Have a chat with Bath Road M/cs in Bristol ( ex BMW main dealer before that car showroom took it over) - they indicated about £250 and threw in an MoT. Mind you, they wouldnt pass the MoT with the tiny amount of play there was but my local bike MoT station did so.
