Looks like my Final Drive is on the way out so am going to need to have it rebuilt. While it's in pieces, was wondering if there are options to improve it, such as stronger bearings... Have seen this:

PE_3.0%20UPGRADE_M.jpg

Sold by one of the BMW dealers in the US. No reference to improving durability... but it is a change in ratio from 2.8 to 3.0... which sounds like quite a big difference in acceleration :green gri

Also, any recommendations for getting the FD rebuilt?

Is that the 4th?

2nd or 3rd... but given the abuse it's had... a 300 pound rebuild every 15k doesn't seem so bad going forward.

The GSA is coming up on 75k and still on the original FD...

I would use non BMW bearings which are better quality. I've just fitted a FAG main bearing which is cheaper as well:thumb

hi
bearing number:fag 6013-2rsr-c3

changing the ratio to 3;0 is for the 18 ich rear
rebuild dave watsons last week from a gs1200 f/d 2;9 he runs the 18 rear wheel

as for lasting long yes the new type bearing is better

Thanks for the info chap :thumb2

Does that mean you have the 3.0 conversion? I run both an 18 and a 17" wheel...

Thanks so much for your valuable contribution... On a site that is essentially based on bikes that do not use chains, in a section that is specifically about bikes that do not use chains.

as others have said, changing the 6013 2rs for a decent quality bearing will help but the main problem with the fd is the undersize pinion nose bearing which given the very small oil capacity is always going to cause further problems, the only real preventitive thing that can be done is frequent oil changes,if you did want to rebuild it using the upgraded crown wheel/pinion set the unit will also need to be reshimmed to adjust the clearances.i can do this for you no problem.

Still, the truth hurts, doesn't it ? ;)

Thanks for the info and offer - may well take you up on it. :thumb2

I'm mortally wounded - I don't know how I will cope.

Hey Mav

Given your wealth of experience with these pesky FD's :D, do you know if a FD off a '06 GS is interchangable with the HP2?

I did a part number search and each bike does have a different FD part number but I'm hoping that may only be because of the different colours (silver vs magnesium).

Cheers mate

I understand that it's the caliper mount is actually different so it's not a straight swap... but I think a regular GS FD can be made to fit by changing the backing plate :thumb2

Update time
So i fitted a 2009 fd off gsa to hp2 with new speed sensor , o9 type bike wouldnt run right so i fitted back plate off hp2 with old type speed sensor and all good

I test rode daves. Hp2 with ktm690r forks which have been setup by someone who knows

So i now have 690r forks just need yoaks and wheel ,spindle and front brake

Time to sell a spare bike me thinks
:D
