Hiya guys before I find myself stranded could anyone tell me is greasing the crown bearing and inner lip of the final drive seal necessary. I.ve just replaced my seal but I.m a little worried with a dry seal rubbing on dry crown somethings gona go tits up.cheers

it really should have been greased, but it will soon get some oil on it. i'm sure it will survive :)

Probably true, but the new seal may not be sitting in the same place as the old one, ie. where it's polished smooth, if you haven't ridden it yet I'd pop the cover off and at least put some oil on it or make a thin plastic strip similar to those used for cleaning fork seals, put some oil on it and wipe it around the inside of the seal :beerjug:

Cheers guys that's for the replies.I,be just took it for a quick spin and all seems fine.I think I,ll go down the timolga route with the plastic strip and lob a little oil on it just to be on the safe side.:thumb

I've never greased a final drive seal on any 1100/1150 and never had any leaK.

In fact I've just stopped for a cup of tea and i'm now going back into the garage to fit a new crown wheel bearing and seal to a customers 1150. :D

Job done and everything packed away for the day.... now lets get some dinner cooked. :D

Well mine is leaking..can I dismantle the whole final drive, pop the seal out, clean the hub up and re-use the same seal.

Why would using grease stop the leak ?

Answer to your question = I don't know, try it and see.

Cheers steptoe.i.ll give it a bash.nothing to loose.i.m hoping theres a little bit of shit on the bearing I missed whilst cleaning it up.

The seal can be driven in to a different position than the original. That can mean that it's sat on a rusty part of the drive hub. It might just be the case that you need to adjust the position of the seal until it sits on the polished area of the metal where the old one was located. Alternatively, clean up the shaft and polish it so that the seal has a nice clean surface to seat onto where ever it is.

Good luck.
