When the bike's cold and I grab my rear wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and wiggle I get a faint clonk - i.e. there's a small amount of bearing play. Much less than 1mm.

Mine's a '07 1200, 36000 miles with the drain plug at the rear.

I'd like to get a 'feel' for what others experience....

my 14 odd thousand mile 08 gsa has a very small amount,no clonk but can just feel slight play

Had about 1mm of play on mine for the last 15k miles. No apparrent problems, oil still comes out of the FD nice and clean at every change.

they are designed like that, there is a tolerance, and the clonk is fine. just take it to your local dealer and say, have a look at this please

unless of course its more than a clonk

but then at least you would be at the dealers to know so:blast

you should be ok,

If you go through past threads the consensus is that the 'accepteable' play according to BuMW is +/- 1mm at the rim. They don't all do it, some are rock solid.

Some people reckon it's the splines on the hub carrier, other reckon it's temperature sensitive ie after a run the play is different.

If it was mine I'd swing down the FD and chek for play on the pinion bearing by seeing if the input shaft wiggles. If it does then the bearings are on their way out.

Rebuilt by dealer. No clonk. more than 1mm play (maybe 2).
Given 2 year guarantee on the work so doesn't bother me if it don't get worser.

My FD was replaced under warranty due to poor paint finish (bubbling up).
It developed 1mm play top to bottom and has been the same ever since.
I now change the FD fluid at every service just in case.

had mine done at 6k service, did not notice any vibrations or roughness when riding but now at 7.5k it rumbles through the seat and pegs at around 25mph should i be worried or am i now paranoid?

FD replaced

Just had the FD unit replaced at 11.5k due to bubbling paint finish and some rust showing on the tube type thingy through the rear wheel.

Also getting both spoked wheels replaced due to the same prob. the rear wheel was all bubbling up around the wheel studs, is this normal?

To be honest, I don't care - this is a thread about bearing play, not paint or rust...

Get your own thread :thumb
