Just gave my R12 final drive a blood change at 9874 miles (2 years old). Didn't spill a drop, as I used a small length of 5mm clear plastic tube connected at one end to a small funnel temporarily taped to the rear rack, the other end inserted into the speed sensor fill hole. This arrangement gave a very slow fill delivery. Just fill the funnel with the correct volume\type of oil and go for a drink:beer:(not the oil) . The old oil is black with some suspended contamination. No large foreign bodies in it though:) . Could it be that BMW use some sort of black moly\graphite during assembly which colours the oil?.

*** black moly\graphite during assembly which colours the oil***

Now thats a thought!
I did my F/D and gearbox last weekend, what a Bloody horrid smell the F/D oil has ( old black stuff )

It just seems a coincidence that all who have changed the final drive oil have commented that the old oil was black:cool: . As far as the smell of the old oil mine did not smell much worse than the new stuff:) . I’m sure that the old oil colour is due to more than just gears meshing.
I have not changed the gearbox oil yet ???.:mmmm
