Final drive.

Of course there will be some play. Question is how much is too much. Ask mikeyboy

Play in what direction?

I've just fitted a low mileage 2nd hand FD and checked it with Mike before fitting; grabbing the input shaft I couldn't detect any side to side play.

Apart from unadjusted taper and angular contact bearings, its rare to ever feel any play in a rolling bearing. It's unlikely to be a good sign.

when the bearings are new there will normally be zero play.
fractions of a mm will be ok if the oil is drained and is clean.
if the oil is black or there are metal fragments on the speed sensor it will need an overhaul.

Thanks for the replies.

At a guess the play is less than half a millimetre, I struggle to see it but I can feel it.
I have a very slight oil leak from the gearbox or the final drive. Its so slight I cannot identify its exact source so this purchase as a serviceable unit to help identify the source.

Mike I'll check the oil and sensor.

Mike is the expert on these and rebuilds them at reasonable cost. (Steptoe as well to keep it fair)

The bevel gears need to mesh very accurately so misalignment soon blackens the oil. Shaft seals usually last as long as the bearing so a leak isn't a good sign.
A failing pinion nose bearing might feel like play in the input bearing but if that breaks up the FD is toast. The pre 2008 1200 is more prone to this.
The main wheel bearing can have lateral play and leak but sill be within service limits. Thats easier to replace. Mine is heading towards needing doing but I'll be getting the whole FD rebuilt rather than just doing the main wheel bearing.

Pressing the panic button? No but we can't feel the bearing from here, so it's only fair to point out the worst case scenario.

If in doubt send it by courier. £30 to send and return is good insurance.

Well got round to checking over the oil and seed sensor on the final drive.
I found the speed sensor loose and on removal it had a tiny grey ring around, but only a very light coating. When I tried to drain the oil very little came out so not sure if its leaked out or if its been drained.
The little bit (10ml ish) of oil I did manage to drain out was clear and only slightly darkened in colour. I couldn't feel and metal in the oil sither.

Final drive problem

Hi all, I have just bought 05 F650gs and while giving an oil and air change today I noticed the drive sprocket is welded on ?. How difficult is it to fit a new final shaft ? Something went wrong in the past, what, I don't know.

Any guidance would be a great help

Regards Derek

total engine strip .plus parts.
i would take a guess at around £500/£600 with gaskets and a s/h shaft.
probably cheaper to fit a replacement motor if you can find one at the right money

Iv had bikes this has been done to depends why or how it 'should' fit, either a thread with big nut,a circlip & washer, castle shaped washer that uses two bolts into sprocket itself, you might be able to get the weld 'carefully' ground off & be ok ?

Best of luck or reweld a new one on when the time comes ! lol saving the full rebuild job.
