Finally a cure for broken fuel strips!

Well it's a cure of sorts. This wont fix your broken strip but if it has failed showing empty tank and the yellow triangle and fuel flashing bugs you then this will override the strip and make your gauge read full. Very handy if you don't want to fork out for a new strip from BMW.

This was picked up from the GS911 message board. With a bit of luck now that this information is known someone might be able to come up with an interface to use a different type of sender, for now though at least it will get rid of the warnings.
 
It is a bit and I suppose a bit dry if you arent interested in the investigation. Skip to page 5 and 6 if you just want the solution, 6 has the compact version. Should cost no more than 50p and your being ripped off at that.

Reading through the thread and followed the reasoning it basically boiled down to this on pg 6

Hi all (new user today) ive had my GS now for nearly 6 yrs and love it, just had my 5th fuel strip pack up, i have the gs911 tool so have installed and calibrated them myself, ie finally decided to go with the resistor fix so i fitted that yesterday, but still have the dreaded orange triangle and fuel warning just wondered if i need to ride the bike for a while to reset it?

I'm doing chores , right now i'm supposed to be painting a wall and fitting a new cooker hood:blast
 
It spoofs the ECU into showing a full tank of fuel. If you have a GSA, carry a spare can. It's a long time between fills and (sooner or later) you will forget to check the odo.
The piezo zapper is worth a try and even easier to do.

I bought my 2008 GS last month. It ran out of fuel last night although the gauge was showing a quarter tank remaining!! (3 bars above the lowest chunk).
It's effing heavy to push, and the 2 hour wait for the RAC to restart my flattened battery was a real pisser.
My question is, is my fuel strip broken.
I removed it from my tank earlier and popped it out of the S bend holder. It looks all in order. No splits or cracks and all the wiring looks sound.

It is reading way to high. 3 bars on empty and shows over half a tank with just 5 litres poured in.

I let the fuel evaporate from the components and then put it all back together and went for a ride - no change.

Does it simply need calibrating or is it broken?

Same thing that caused it to loose calibration in the first place. It's basically failing and will keep on doing so. Really bad design for some reason but it took them years to back away from the idea. If we were in the US we would enjoy a 10 year guarantee on it but they deem the rest of the world unworthy.
 
Oh. Not good.
What newer design did they come up with? Leaving the rest of us with older bikes to guess how much fuel we have left.
 
I must admit, the flimsy strip of plastic with lines of foil stuck to it did look shit.
I'm assuming being immersed in petrol causes it to fail.

Will the newer revised float fit in our bikes?
 
No you can't convert to the float switch. Different software and different ecu pins. BMW apparently tried a retrofit solution but couldn't get it to work. That is just rumour in a few places but either way there was never a fix.
 
The miles display on mine randomly resets the trip display to total miles. Sooner or later I get fed up faffing about with the hard to reach button and end up running out of petrol. Easy to do when you fill about every 6 weeks.
