Finally, after 4 years and 50k....

...I managed to completely tune the backfiring out of my bike!
Gone I tell you! Banished for ever. Not only that but I think I also rid it of the irritating intermittent pinking too - although won't know for sure til summer.

55k on mine now and it really is running better than ever - I'm very happy - I AM THE DADDY!!

Didn't set out to do it specifically - just a quick tune up twist services, and then wanted to retard the ignition a bit to see if it solved my pinking issues. So:

Valve clearances - paid extra attention to get them perfect, but I normally do that anyway.

TB balance as usual.

Retarded ignition, only by about 1 or 2 degrees following the guide that Colban found. I think this sorted the pinking - can't get it to do it at all now although the real test will come in summer.

Set the TPS, only this time is set it to just under 4.00v - usually I set it to about 3.80. I reckon this in combination with getting the valves perfect is whats done it guv!
