I'd been wanting to ride one of these for a while now but kept putting it off 'cos I'm only too aware of how dangerous test rides can be..............

I prefer the R version, mostly on looks but also 'cos of the 21/18" wheels. Leisuretrail only had the standard model on demo but no great shakes and I rolled up there this morning to take it out for a spin.

Loads has already been written about the bike so I'll just bung a few of what I thought were the highs and the lows of the bike:

Electronics/modes - way easy to use, WBM could learn a thing or two here when compared to the 'wheel' thing on the WC.
Felt a real difference between the modes but left it in 'Sport' in the end, perfectly fine for inner city traffic as well as hooning on back roads. Fly by wire throttle was perfect for me; lovely.

Heat from the exhaust on left leg - none what so ever, even in heavy traffic.

Engine/box - The box was a delight, smooth & positive changes everywhere. The engine seemed harsh and very 'mechanical', nowhere near as smooth as my hexhead. This improved as the revs increased and once I re-calibrated myself to use more revs than the GS I didn't notice it. It defo needs to be rev'd though and has none of the turbine smoothness of a well run in GS. It was fairly vibey and I did wonder what it would be like on a long M-way trip?

Comfort - for me it was perfect. The bike is a little bit lower (the R is taller), a little bit smaller and a whole lot lighter than my GS. Really, noticeably lighter. The seat is a bit harder and not tilted as far down as my GS. Still dead comfy after 3 hours .

Handling - Brakes were perfect, feel and power in spades.
A GS flatters poor riding with exceptional handling. This bike almost does, but not quite as well. However, put a bit more effort and thought into your ride and it leaps ahead. In hoon mode I was riding known and not so well known roads at least 10mph faster and didn't even realise it until I looked at the speedo. 'Confidence inspiring' I think it's called :)

Performance - Seems quite 'normal' at normal 'GS revs', then when you realise it'll rev almost twice as high you start to use them and scare yourself shitless as the front wheel comes up (I don't 'do' wheelies ). Then when you've calmed down and start to get used to it you just can't stop giggling everywhere :bounce1
Very tractable through town too and easier to ride smoothly at low speed compared to the GS.

Finish - Good quality components let down by, I thought, average finish in places. Nowhere near as good as a GS and that really rankled on what is such an expensive bike.

Overall impression - LOVED IT! Whilst flawed in some places it has CHARACTER in spades. Character is not a word I'd place within a million miles of my GS, as much as I do love it. Maybe it's the flaws that give the KTM it's character, perverse but probably true :nenau Or maybe it's just that engine :bounce1

Next step is to get Amanda out on it in a week or two and do some M-way miles to see just how suitable it is for that. I can put up with the extra vibes and stuff but it may be more of an issue for her as may be the slightly smaller rear seat and as the bike is would be used for big mile trips for the two of us that could well be a deal clincher..................................we'll see!

Oh dear:D:D

As much a I loved it, and a bit of time's passes since riding one and I've calmed down a bit now and can honestly say I much prefer my 950 for what I need but would definitely have an 1190 over any GS:)

It's the smoothest V twin I've ever ridden and can't say I have any noticably nasty vibes at all. Still running it in tho' and now reving up to 6500 rpm. I love the electro suspenders and...........in fact, the only gripe I have is the horn is crap. I think the finish stands well against the toilet and believe it should stand the test of time pretty well. I also have a new pipe on order to release a bit more sound, but other than that, I can't see me spending too much more money on it to make it better bacause it's pretty much fine the way it is.

Yeah, I was surprised about the harshness  but my only experiance of v-twins is Guzzi so maybe it's just how they roll? I'm hoping to get out on it again this Saturday with Amanda so will see what it's like when being ridden 'normaly' :thumb - having said that it was a low revs that it felt harsh, get above 5/6k and it smoothed out (but the vibes were always there to a lesser or greater extent).

Finish - well, things like the little storage box inside of the screen were cheap and nasty, the seat mounting was again cheap and a bit flimsy compared to a GS and generally I just felt the quality of mouldings etc were not up to WBM quality. Oh, and the handlebar clamp bolts were all showing signs of rust, as was one of the baffle mounting bolts and the rear disc, inboard of the swept area was very rusty - all on a 2,500 mile bike. Not really issues but on a bike costing this much and more than a WC it didn't seem right.

Having said that none of the above is a deal breaker for me, nothing is ever perfect and the psoitives on this bike hugely outweigh the minor niggles. All I need is the 'pillion seal of approval' and I may well end up joining you in the world of v-twin KTM ownership :)

Hi folks,

Had my test ride a week or so ago and loved it. The power was intoxicating, but it was the brakes, handling and general lightness that really blew me away. Currently negotiating with the dealer to see how painful it would be to make the change, and probably another test ride to make sure, as the first one was with Mrs Monty. The pillion perspective was the main hurdle to overcome!

The next decision would be the colour... I always thought I would go for orange with no hesitation, but I like the more subtle (bland?) grey one as well. The R is the best colour but I am not convinced about the 21/18 wheels for all the road work and I do like the electronic suspension.

I feel myself slipping! :o

Oh dear indeed! :D

Andres

Any GS except mine that is:D

Have to say, the more I ride the 950, the less convinced I am about the 1190 :blast

I'm running one tooth less on the front sprocket and it's at least as fast in the real world as the 1190, feels and handles just like a big pogo offroad which the 1190 doesn't plusI think it looks much better.

Yes, my opinions are biased because it's such a good offroad and road bike, so if it's just a brand new road bike you want the 1190s as good as anything.

Out this afternoon on it to get myself a bit more focused before the TAT, it just fits right:)

The 950/990 shook the big trailie world upside down because they were bought for their offroad ability, the 1190 will be bought for it's one great feature on tarmac, that awesome engine but there's plenty of competition out there.

Well, I'm still running mine in, but still managed just over 300 miles today, rode up from the Peak District up towards Hexham on a broad variety of roads. The small screen on the R doesn't cause any buffeting but the upshot of this is that it makes the Arai Tour X3 very noisy, I suppose you could wear ear plugs, but I don't like them.
The heat from underneath the seat made itself known today, especially at a standstill, it will be welcome when it gets colder but when the temperature is above 25 degrees its a bit intrusive.
The suspension is a little on the firm side on badly repaired roads, but overall gives superb control and feedback, something the GS12 lacks especially the front.
Overall I'm very impressed, I don't think it will appeal to all GS riders as it does lack the relaxed nature of the boxer twin, being more apealing to riders used to chain driven sports bikes or enduro bikes.
I won't be selling the GS12 just yet, might even keep em both!

Mmmmmm, I find myself agreeing with all you've written Tim (not just the bit I've quoted).

Re competition I don't agree. I think you're argument is true for the WC as that is very much a road bike now and it was what I mentioned in my road test of it; that it had moved into fast road bike territory but that the competiton in that area was strong (and better in many respects).

With the 1190R it's (maybe) moved into 'very fast' road bike teritory BUT is still capable of off roading in a much more serious way than, say, a WC (but maybe not as much as a 950/990 :nenau Oh, and the 950/990 defo looks loads better................ :thumb2

Descisions, descisions....................................

nope, can't agree with that at all.

the 1190 looks rather nice. not a great looker, but nice enough.

the 950/90 looks like it was drawn by a bloke who only could only draw straight lines. not helped by the penny farthing wheel arrangement either. i know it's better off road, but i'm not interested in that at all, so smaller front wheel for me :)

It's a tough one and probably depends on whether you really do intend to use it offroad.

I know you shouldn't, but I have no qualms about taking the 950 offroad by myself where I could be in trouble should I get hurt.
If I were to just ride easy tracks etc. then the 1190 would also be fine for me and I'm sure much better than a GS.... I just can't say how I'd be on a rougher stuff because I didn't try it and it had the smaller front wheel.
Now that I've had the 950 a while I'm even more suprised at how folk tried to compared them to the GS's, they're a completely different tool.

What Cookie's saying about the looks of the 950/990 is right but very much depends on the colour, graphics etc. because a plain one (orange:barf) just highlight's those awful slab sides.
990R looks gorgeous imo:drool and if I were buying new that's what I get, while you can!...and they're cheap.

Saying that, if I had an 1190 I'd love it:)

There, that's not helped at all has it?:D

No, you haven't helped at all Tim! :D

Mmmmmm, it's funny,it's the slab sidedness of the 950/90 that I really like and I love the blue / orange combo :)

On the new bikes I'm not overly taken with the standard model but think the 'R' looks pretty cool.

The bike will be used off road for defo, but is primarily there as a road bike and a distance road bike at that, with Amanda on the back on big trips so I do need to take her into account. On that score I suspect she will have been spoilt by the GS which is the only bike she's been on tha back of (apart from a hilarious and non too succesful outing on the back of the Griso :D), we'll see what she thinks on Saturday..............

I'd discounted the 950/90's for the above reason .............but.........any idea what sort(ish) of money the few 990's left are going for Tim?

Or maybe I should keep the GS and go for the 630 Husky I've got my eye on and spend some money on that getting it sorted..............

.

You'd have to ask Timpo, he's recently got a new 990R, I think around £8.5K

Dellis is a good one to ask regarding general use as he went from a GS to a 990 and does loads of camping trips two up.

Ange says she doesn't have her 'own space' on the 950 but it's comfy with a Renazco seat.
Personally, I hate a pillion having 'their own space' because often you feel their weight coming into the bend just after tipping in but of course for touring on a GS that doesn't matter so much.

Husky's you're kind of bike too:D:blast

Food for thought Tim, ta, that's a lot of bike for 8 1/2k :) I'll see if we can blag a quick spin on one as well on Saturday - I do like that engine in the 1190 though....................

I know Dellis of old so will have a chat, hadn't thought to ask him, thanks for the reminder :beerjug:

You're not making the choices any easier though............... ;)
