Finding 1st

R1200GS '57 on 7k
When starting off from home I frequently find a gentle prod won't get 1st gear and I've found that I have to ease out the clutch slightly whilst pressing down on the lever, then it drops in neatly with a slight forward lurch. From my house it's only 200m to a junction so I have to stop a take 1st again. It works fine and is good from then on. Does anyone else notice this, is it just 'waking' up? or is it the begginings of a fault?

Any thoughts welcomed (well almost any)

ive had this on loads of bikes - my old speed triple was a sod for it, and going even further back my old CG125 did it as well, and that was in the 80's. Don't worry about it. I usually pull the clutch in and out a couple of times when I first get on the bike or give the throttle a quick blip. Been doing it for so long now I do it most of the time without thinking.

My 05 1200 does that too. Not worried at all. Just a bit embarresing when i let the clutch out giving it loads of revs and going absolutely nowhere.

Clutch out in neutral to get the innards of the box spinning, pull in the clutch and go for 1st at the same time. With a bit of practice to get the timing right, there will only be a slight clunk as the gear engages and since you are pulling the clutch in while engaging the gear there won't be any lurch.

Thanks for the confidance lift I'm one of those sad gits that's always looking for the fault that insn't there and breathing a sigh of releif when I complete a trouble free journey!

p.s. Do they all knock on start up from cold?
