Went to change my air filter yesterdy,i was surprised to find a film of very fine dust......not shitloads but enough to cause concern mainly on the inside of front wall (closest to ABS).
Could not see any obvious leakage path, will put a film of grease along edge when it goes back together........ Anybody else had this on the 1200,gs or gsa. Cheers.:blast :beerjug:

Thanks for that terayon, i wonder if anybody else has had this problem

I have installed a K&N which comes with grease in the kit. The grease is very thick and is used to form a seal around the filter base before installing it in the airbox filter housing.

Maybe in a very dusty environment, it wouold be pragmatic to enhance the standard filter in a similar manner (or fit a cleanable K&N.)

Gday Adam , your advice is appreciated and heeded will order K&N monday.
Cheers.

Some folks will say a K&N isn't necessary, isn't as good as a paper filter etc:

If K&N were poor, they wouldn't get used in Baja racers for desert use. They flow more air than standard (whether more air is needed or not is a separate argument) and provided they are cleaned and reoiled, will pay for themselves after three services. They are also tougher than the stock paper filter.

I would NOT use an oiled filter element such as a K&N where a hot wire mass-airflow sensor was used eg most new cars (filter oil causes coating/burning of the hot wire leading to fuel injection problems), but for my basic R1200GS induction circuit it is fine.

You may find that when you fit the K&N, you have a job to refit the intake snout as it is a tighter fit: the K&N element is thicker than the paper type and the wedges need a tap to get them to slide into place.

The best "High Efficiency Particulate Air" (HEPA) filters remove at least 99.97% of particulate. It would therefore be reasonable to say that a automotive filter (any brand or type) is less efficient.....:nenau

Very fine dust is normal under some environmental conditions...

Use a pre-filter when very dusty

I have found the best solution for very dusty riding is to fit the pre filter 'condom'.
You can buy them from Unifilter in Sydenee along with the foam filter that they make for the GS!
