Ok so in 5 months on my 1200Gs ive had:-

New Top box & plate,
Gearbox Oil Seals,
Front Engine Cover,
New Petrol Tank
and now, next Friday, Rear drive !!! :(

IS that it or what else breaks!!!!

Wollaston have been brilliant, no arguments on all of this but should it happen??

If it wasnt for the fact that its one of the best bikes Ive bl***y ridden I'd flog it tommorrow. IS it not time MBW started to extend their warranties so we can feel confident riding these chuffing things! :nenau

not had the flat battery yet then?

or the accessory socket turning itself off?

lower triple clamp coming undone?

brakes failing?

what do you think?

Or the gearbox failing?
Or the gearbox failing again?
Or the gearbox failing again again?
Or the speedo failing?
Or the rev counter failing?
Or every single electric and electronic function failing?
Or the paint falling off?

New bikes appear to be much better built. I've done 180 miles on my new one and nothing has broken yet. Plus no corrosion has appeared yet.

Build quality appears to be huuuugely improved on new bikes so I'm hoping for no major faults with this one

Mine is pretty much fully functional, I wonder if it's normal :P
Shoud I send it back because it is missing all the wonderful issues that everyone seem to have ?

Me too, mines a June 04 model, and i'm very disappointed that nothing's gone wrong, i'm going to see my dealer to ask if he can program some faults in, i do feel left out of these threads because i've got nothing to slag the bike off with.

....fuel pump - I'm sure you'll need a few of those. Some new wheels as well. Rocker covers rot.

F*ck me some kraut was having a bad day when that was built

18 months on mine and ridden it like a tart with a tight **** - no probs so far. :thumb

I was thinking of extending my warranty, then got an offer I couldn't refuse on a new 1200 (square stand, etc). I won't say how much, but it might be worth asking the dealer.

....changing up to a new GS is only marginally more expensive than the extended warranty!!! Last time I asked on changing up it was £4.5k

Roughly the same amount of money for a swap in France, mine is a september 2004 / 20 000 kms...
That's a lot of money :loopy

Don't mean to be funny, but at just 180 miles I would bloody well hope not. :eek

Marcus - you really did get the runt of the litter I'm sure - if yours was the bike that ate gearboxes. And it's bad for all BMW owners/potential owners to know that there are issues as serious as this. But for those like me who bought from the first wave into the UK I also knew I was buying warranty - ie peace of mind. And I've had issues - corrosion, failed immobiliser, worn seat cover, worn seat rubber thingies underneath, frame bungs mysteriously disappearing - ALL have been corrected by BMW.

If I replace with new I will expect some of these issues to have been sorted - but no doubt there will be others and I'll make sure they're resolved under warranty.

It's a big complex mechanical lump coated in high-tech paints and finishes and subjected at least in my case to daily doses of salt/damp/stones/sunlight and maybe a weekly wash and spray/wipe with whatever oily stuff is at hand at the time.

I have owned much more expensive cars and in all cases (inc BMW) I have had to resort to warranty to get probs solved.

So my advice to all - get on it, ride it, wash it occasionally and check for wear. And if you do spot anything give your dealer a heads-up and have it sorted at the next service (minced gearboxes being the exception!!! :D ).

That way when you reach the end of your 2 year warranty you will have a bike with x miles on the clock in tip top condition. Options are then to:

:) Sell at a good price and replace with new under warranty

 Extend the warranty

 Keep it, relax and face the music.

 Change it for a more reliable .....what?

Decisions, decisions - cheers :beerjug:

Wash it??? nobody said you had to be that careful when I bought it!!!

Re other issues, yep had a new Discovery that fell apart at the seams (oh, wait a minute when I got this it was owned by BMW, a theme??).

Had a Triumph ST where.............sod it, nothing broke in 12,000 miles and 14 months (apart from my heart at the trade in value!).

Ive had, Guzzi's, Hondas, Suzuki's, Yamaha's and Kawwasaki's and the only bike that was any where as near as bad was my first Suzuki 750 water bottle!

I will ride and enjoy it, but will never trust and that is sad for £8.5K!! :nono

....1st 1200GS gearbox imploded at 140 miles......

I've had a good poke about my new one (Jan 06). The build quality and finish are A LOT improved on my old (Nov 04) version.

Also it's pretty easy to spot lots of changes to how they are made.

As an aside, BMW Park Lane acted in a very professional and grown up fashion once the seriousness and frequency of breakdowns was fully explained and understood.
