A couple of years ago, we made the mistake of installing a 'dictionary' option or some other add-on suggested when Firefox updated. The whole machine seized up and crashed. Needless to say, we hadn't got an up-to-date backup ... We managed to retrieve most of our data in the end with a bit of help from clever friends, but the hard disk was trashed. We still have no idea how installing these add-ons came to have such a dramatic effect, but it was instant and basically irrepairable.
My OH, John, bought a new hard disk and completely rebuilt the machine. We still use Firefox in preference to IE, but we never install any of the add-ons. So far, so good.
Check your PopUp settings. Not sure about the system you are using, but some web mail applications open a popup box so you can browse for the file. The wrong settings on Firefox will stop this.
