Just had my rear 1150 GSA shock back from Firefox after a rebuild and noticed there's no Schrader valve been fitted, just a small s/s bolt at the top where I assume they've put the oil in. As it's bank holiday now I can't call them till Tuesday so I wanted to know if anyone could shed any light on this? Should they be re gassed? is oil on it's own okay?

The website does say ..........

Rebuild shock absorber using Motul oil.Re-gas with nitrogen and left on test for 24 hours.

but it doesn't say re-gas with nitrogen under pressure :P I had my rear shock done a couple of months ago, it too has the small screw instead of a schrader valve

Wild guess ....... liquid nitrogen poured in ....... screw inserted ........ nitrogen warms, expands and pressurises...... actually no feckin idea :nenau

They could have a clamp-on fitting to add the nitrogen with a gland seal for the screwdriver?

I use a similar tool for changing schrader valve cores on refrigerant gas circuits whilst under pressure without loss of gas, I can use the same tool to connect into the system to add gas etc.

Or perhaps it's just an air/oil emulsion shock as standard?

Or the Nitrogen replaces the air (but is at atmospheric pressure) just to prevent foaming of the oil??

Thanks for that folks. I feel a little bit better now but I'll call them when they open again and ask what they did. I'll report back. :thumb

Was it the original BMW shock? I'd been informed that you couldn't refurbish them? Need to know as if so, will get mine sent off to Firefox too. Presumably apart from your question, you're happy with the rebuild? He'll of a saving compared to a replacement. Advice anyone?

Extract from an email I received from Firefox re having oem '08 R1200RRTP shocks overhauled and Hyperpro progressive springs fitted. I assume this includes their otherwise £35 setup charge

"The rebuild the shocks are £115 each plus the spring ,
I think the Hyperpro springs are around £90 per shock,
finally you would have the labour for removing and re fitting the units this would be around 2.5-3 hr in total so about £105.
With everything I would think you are about £500.

We would need the bike for around 3-4 days and I would have to order the springs in beforehand.
I hope this helps.

£115 + £90 + £105 + everything = £500

Looks to me like everything is £190
Quite expensive but I suppose it is everything

Bad maths .... 2x £115 + 2x £90 + about £105 = £515 ... ie. about £500. Obviously less if you remove and refit the shocks yourself which is pretty straightforward. Hyperpro springs are definitely worth the extra :thumb2

Thanks. Will call them on Tuesday. I'm talking about an 1150 GSA but guess it will be similar. I'll be fitting myself. Looks fairly straightforward.

shock

I rang the guy at Firefox Racing, he said that my shock had been re gassed and they use a 'special' machine...other than that he wasn't very helpful. The rear end does feel a little better now though. £123.50 including p&p and was done in a week.

Took my rear shock (R1100GS) in to Firefox last October. Later that day Linda threw my FJ down the road, so I completely forgot about my spare GS shock until about March:blast

They quoted me £125 when I took it in, when I eventually rang them it was £200, buit I think the £125 was for a basic re-build, the £200 is because I asked them to replace the original spring, I think with a Hyperpro.

Still a damned good price compared to a new unit.

Can't comment on the performance yet, I still haven't been able to afford to pick it up. :tears

Should have got ity with my tax rebate at Christmas, instead of a washer and tumble dryer...:eek

had my 1100 rear shock re-furbed at firefox a couple of years ago. was pleased with the results. one word of warning, when you refit it be careful not to knock the mentioned small s/s screw they fit. its easily damaged, as i did, and lets all the gas out. to be fair to firefox they repaired it and didnt charge me.
