The battery on my (recently acquired) '97 R1100GS was flat, so I took it out and charged it.

After putting everything back together, the bike started up, so that's good. :-)

However, it is now running a bit rough. For the first 4km or so, it was surging. That's now largely stopped, but it still sounds a bit rough.

Is the most likely cause of this that I stirred up sediment in the petrol tank? If so, will it likely come good with a new tank of fuel, or should I be doing something else?

thanks .. Jason

Not sure where you are based but getting it serviced and the TB's balanced will probably sort it out.

Does it have the original exhaust/air filter etc?

When you changed the battery, did you reset the TPS ( Throttle Position Sensor) by turning on the ignition (not starting the bike) and opening the throttle the whole way 3 times, then turning the ignition off again? (you may need to disconnect the battery again, or unplug the correct fuse to get the TPS to reset before doing the above)

Also, check your throttle cables are correctly seated where they attach to the throttle bodies, they can sometimes pop out causing it to run rough.

This is the first I've heard of the throttle position sensor, so thanks Awfers for that and the tip about the throttle cable/bodies.

Nearest dealer is 3 (Albury) or 5 (Melbourne) hours away, so I'll be having a look at the above before resorting to the dealer :-)

AFAIK it is original exhaust and air filter.

Does that apply to the 1997 R1100 ? I thought that only worked for the 1150 or the later R1100S ?

Was the bike running ok before you removed the battery ? - if so you don't need the throttle bodies balanced.

First check the throttle cables are seated properly. They usually unseat whenever the tank is removed.

.

The bike will set it's TPS automatically as it's used.

Thanks for the advice gents, and sorry for the delay in saying so. I've been away (how good is motorama.it?!), and only just got back to this this morning.

Anyway, the good news is, it was just the right side throttle cable not seated properly. Trivial to correct, once you know what to look for. So thanks especially for cable.jpg, Steptoe.

cheers.

Anyone ever done a head count on the no. of times this photos been posted?:D

How ever many times it's been posted, it will never over take how many times it has happened.

:D

We've all been there, I bet it even happened to Steptoe once upon a time.

Honesty time, have you ever been caught out steppers?

Yes, just the once on my own bike. And i knew all about the well known cable problem, it just didn't occur to me with everything that was going on at that moment in time.

I'm really pissed off that I've never managed to unseat the cable ....must try harder:D
