My son is looking for his first car ,Yorkshire or Derbyshire prefered, but can travel for the right car

His budget is £1500

It must be insurance-friendly and reliable. Cosmetic condition not a concern.

I know he doesnt like the Nissan micra or Fiat 500s
Cheers

Age is all important,

if he's over 24 /5 it get a lot cheaper insurance wise - so 1.3+ becomes a viable option

I liked the Audi A2 and I recall they had an aluminium frame and body panels, so should be rust free.

I had a Land Rover Series IIA petrol as my first car and it cost more to insure than buy that first year!

My lad just passed his test aged 17. Bought him a 58 plate Suzuki Swift 1.5 VVTI for £1200 and he loves it but the insurance was £2258 with a black box and a 10k mileage limit 😳

Should have bought him a classic car. My mates sons both used his Morris Traveller which even as teens cost peanuts for them to insure and forced them to learn basic mechanics

Swift has ABS plus seat and side airbags and is a solid thing. Those old cars are nice to look at but death traps in a collision.
We replaced the brake pads and fuel filler pipe at the weekend so he’s learning about running an older car.
Fuel filler pipe was a twat to do !

The first car I bought my daughter was a Swift (SZ3?) and it was a great car so I didn't go down the classic car route. Unfortunately she ignored the emails from the insurance company warning her about her driving style (the black box records acceleration, braking, collisions etc) the final straw was when she drove into the back of a van (the van just drove off but the tow bar went through the radiator ) and they wanted to cancel her insurance which would have made her virtually impossible to insure again. I had to convince them that the poor driving was when I was at the wheel  and they agreed to let us cancel the policy. We reinsured her through Adrian Flux as they brokered a policy that didn't require a black box. She's an upstanding citizen now :D

I’m hugely impressed with the build quality of the Suzuki tbh. The inner arch had to come out to replace the fuel filler and there was no corrosion at all bar some light surface rust behind it. The 1.5 vvti is a stonking engine and goes much better than the 100 ish bhp would suggest it actually has a power band that kicks in around 4500 revs.
The black box we have monitors speed, time of day and length of time driven plus eco driving.
He drove for over 2 hours in one go and they really didn’t like that so he got docked a mark but other than creeping over the speed limit a couple of times it’s been ok.
I prefer him to have it tbh as he’s very good at keeping the speed down.

My advice to my lads is don't buy a car until you can afford something reasonable. A £1500 car will most likely cost a lot to keep on the road unless they are actually wanting a project car.

I have just bought a VW High Up for my daughter, that’s a group 2 and it’s great fun to drive, once you get rid of the common irritations, she has not passed her test yet but it’s quoting around £1200 to insure finger crossed that’s as much as it will be. I don’t think they look girlie like a fiat 500

My daughter will be selling her Citroën C1 very shortly. It's a 2009 with a genuine 21000 miles. It was an old lady's shopping car before she had it. Costs her £1300 without a blackbox to insure as a 17/18 old.
But is a bit over your budget at £1900.

The sad part about this is the insurance will cost more than the car , we've all been there, I purchased a Toyota yaris 2011 for my 19year old daughter £2000 , the insurance was £2200 with a black box and 5000 miles a year , that's 100 miles a week or there abouts, why so expensive? We will never know . Good luck .

See my post if you can stretch a bit.

My son’s old a2 TDi is now available. I’ll need to mot it first, but it’s a good solid safe manual car with cosmetic pre-damage! Well within budget at around £850. 70 mpg and £30 tax.
Thanks Nin , I will speak to him this evening
