I just bought a new R1200GS. I have not had a motorcycle for 15 years. I would like to change my oil. Where is the oil nut located? Do you have any suggestions that will assist me in changing oil on a GS?

I`d suggest starting again with some kind of greeting and introduction.

And follow it up with the reading of a suitable manual for your bike.

Welcome to the site friend, and enjoy the GS. As North says "This is a great site, with lots of information and laughs".

Of course you do get the odd miserable git who welcomes you in the fashion of "I'd suggest starting again with some kind of greeting and introduction.

Ah, the vagaries of web messaging! Unfortunately, I received my bike via a long distance purchase and no manuals arrived with the bike. Since posting my message I have done further reviews of this site and others for more information and I now have the details I needed. Based in Bend, OR, USA my gs allows me access to areas that most bikes would have problems traveling. I have found this riding community site interesting with a great deal of riding information and and maintenance tips. I hope to contribute.

Thanks for the sites on the filter wrench and related information and I appreciate the welcome to this site/community. As I indicated I live in Bend, OR and have been away from bikes for awhile. My new gs is great fun although I am learning more about it with each ride. I am planning some long distance rides this summer and fall in the US and Canada. If you are ever in Bend let me know.

I can only think that Tarka's day job is as a traffic warden. Anyway, just remove the bash plate under the sump and all becomes clear. The only problem is that any normal filter spanner wont fit. BMW make one, which is of course expensive. There are others but you will have to search.

Check the oil level every ride at first - these bikes do use oil so if you are used to modern cars that dont use oil and therefore dont think of checking, you could have an expensive lesson.

Birdseye, Thanks for the response and information. I will be checking my oil level prior to each ride.

Give him a break, it's hot, he wont change out of his black gear and his make up's running :D

Lman, Oil, POP, maybe do a search here. But I wonder, spanking new 1200? Shouldnt you get a free first service over there?

I live a considerable distance from a BMW dealer so I plan to do most basic maintenance myself. Got the oil changed yesterday, didn't over fill as recommended. Epoxyed a nut to the oil filter elliminating the need for a filter wrench. Thanks for everyones suggestions. Headed to the Oregon BMW rally on Friday, hope the weather cooperates.

super idea

quote; Epoxyed a nut to the oil filter

Gotta hand it to you I really like that one well done !

better than my bash an old carving fork into the filter and unscrew with a large screwdriver wedged in the fork cause Im too tight to buy a filter wrench

Bit messy my way.

I picked up the epoxy/nut idea from this web site: http://www.r1200gs.info/#recommend

It has links to a great deal of information/options/etc...
