After 12 years on the same old 1150 thought I would treat myself to a upgrade 08 1200 few miles on it but very very clean near 60k first ride out and fuel gauge saying empty and its full to brim flashing "FUEL"and orange triangle after a read on forum I'm thinking fuel strip thing in tank ? Next problem it's running very lumpy on idle and small throttle openings slow to pickup but rideable I thought coil stick but all check out ok when unplugging one at a time and yes I have done all four any ideas what to check next or am I off to see steptoe. Lucky still got me old 1150 can't bear to let it go.

Do a TPS reset and see if it helps. It takes 30 seconds and costs zero. Next on my list would be a TB sync and possibly even a check at the valve clearances.

Yes it will be the waste if space fuel strip that is stuffed.

I would have thought the FPC would work harder as the revs went up rather than as the fuel level went down.
As long as the pump has fuel to pump the height of the head of fuel shouldnt make any odds well not over 5 or 6 inches
(the depth of the tank). I would have though the system must have a pressure regulator and a flow sensor.
I may be wrong I often am according to my mrs.

If you are in sandridge I am just around the corner and I have a GS911 and a fuel strip zapper. PM me.

Are you sure about that?

There is a very long thread on advrider that covers the subject. To cut a (very) long story short, if the tank empties properly when the fuel pump controller is bypassed then you have a weak fuel pump.

The fuel pump normal mark-space ratio is adequate to supply the injectors and a good pump will empty the fuel tank. However to extend pump life the controller runs the pump at low output. When the tank gets to around 25% full the pump is run harder. this drives the in-tank venturi pump which lifts fuel from the RHS. The fuel return flow does the work.

An older pump on normal duty may have enough push to feed the injectors but not enough to run the venturi and the bike will run dry with 2 gallons stuck in the tank.

Its a complex solution to a simple problem that could have been solved with separate fuel take-offs and a reserve tap.

This covers the spoof to create a fake full tank reading. I don't know the resistance values needed to spoof an almost empty tank.

I tried resetting the TPS and still the same I'm going to try new plugs and check valve clearances next. I can't see TB sync changing anything as its not just the idle you can feel it when riding bike . It feels like a slight misfire and holding back under acceraration but top end feels ok but not perfect

Well quick update had a bit of free time today and made a zapper from bits laying around in the workshop.connected it up 6 zaps later and gauge working again did not work straightaway but after riding a few hundred yards all looks ok.we will see how long it lasts thanks for all the advice and help now to get it running better.

Sounds like the fuel strip has reset as it does after you have refuelled. When you do you will notice that the fuel level is indicated at the pre fill level and only alters to the new level after a short distance, this is a design feature to show you that (ironically) the fuel strip is working.

Cheers

Before spending too much cash try putting some expensive fuel in. It never ceases to amaze me how much better my TC runs when I treat it to 98RON
