We had a bright sunny day in the Midlands and Alena told me to b*gger off on the bike for a few hours:D I think she's got fed up with having me around the house since breaking up for Christmas so of course I did as I was bid:thumb2

The last time I had chance to use the GS was when I used it to go to the NEC bike show so a good few weeks ago. The first thing I noticed was the salt encrusted on it so I made a mental note to give it a wash when I returned. I set off and hit a problem when I couldn't shift from 2nd to 3rd. I pulled in and after a few minutes of revving, clutching and levering I managed to get it to select all of the gears. At first I thought the problem might be down to the gearbox oil being very thick due to the recent cold spell but as I continued I realised that I couldn't drop down the box - it was as if the gear lever was not returning back to the "home" position after being pressed down.

I took it home and after an inspection I could see that the lever upward return action was very "lazy" and indeed it was not returning to the normal position; I suspected that the problem was in the area where the lever pivots on the footpeg hanger. I disconnected the top ball socket linkage and sure enough the pivot was very stiff. I decided to remove the lever and grease/lube up the pivot. The first problem is that you have to access the pivot hex head bolt from the back of the footrest hanger. I managed to get a hex bit into it and went to the other side of the bike and managed to fit a socket and extension bar onto the hex bit and get my ratchet onto it. Would it shift? would it b*ggery, so I put an extension bar onto the ratchet to give me more leverage and after jamming the gear lever I managed to get the bolt to move about an eighth or quarter turn. Fortunately this was enough to loosen the gear lever up as it should be. I squirted some lubricating oil into the pivot, greased up the ball sockets and it all seems ok now.

I am concerned with a couple of things though -

1. What caused the tightening up in the first place, is it just a case of the pivot becoming "dry" through use or is it something else?
2. Should the pivot retaining bolt be as tight as it is? The hex bit slipped out a couple of times and has "chewed" up the hex bolt hole a little. It took a lot of effort to get it to move a little and when it did move and freed up the lever I abandoned my idea of removing the pivot completely as I was worried that I might chew the bolt up completely or shear it?

Anybody else had this problem or know of it?

The bike is an 01 1150 with 25k on the clock.

Had the same problem Mike, it'd just gone dry and was worse when warm....a strip down of the rose joints, clean and grease sorted it...:thumb2

Exactly as Mike said Mike. I had the same problem earlier in the year on my '01 1150. Give the hex bolt a good squirt of penetrating oil and try to get it out. it really is better to clean and grease the whole inner area of the pivot.

HTH

Same symptoms last year, including the hex head! :augie
Strip, clean and re-grease as said.
Word of caution though.
I managed to drill it out after striping the head and replaced with a new one costing 40p. If that hadn’t worked it would have cost about £80 for the linkage.
Mind how you go.

Thanks

Many thanks for the help guys. It looks as if I need to do a "proper job" and remove the pivot and regrease it. Is is possible to remove the whole of the footrest hanger with the gear lever still attached? If I can do this then at least I can get it into the workshop and into the vice and have good access in order to attack the pivot bolt?

If you've a Y piece fitted it's far easier to remove the lever with the footrest hanger attached. It can be a stubborn bugger, and attached to the bike makes if far easier than in a vice.

gear change

Having had the same prob found the bolt reffered to has been fitted with locktite, (factory job) I took off the footrest hanger and put the pivot assembly in a vice. Heat the assembly up with a hot air gun to relase the lock tight unless yuo have a good fitting allen key and a vice. I drilled the gear leaver and put a grease nipple in it for future use and since have no more probs. This is possibly a waste of time as the pivot is such a snug fit on the bolt theres not much room to pump in grease so possibly a good clean
and re-assembly with plenty of grease will possibly be good enough. That was about 30.000 miles ago and no problem since. But DO take care with this tight bolt as it is TIGHT! use a heat gun.
Dave (with grease nipple) GS.

All excellent advice. I was wondering if it might be loctited from the factory and if I might need a bit of heat and you have confirmed that. I think I will go for removing the footrest assembly and using my hot air gun on it as suggested by Dave.

Will any type of grease suffice? I have a variety in my garage so I have some options?

this chap has same fault but hes good at parking

Gear ,lever

I just used general purpose grease as I've had a large tin of it in the garage for very many years!, don't forget to put it back with a bit of locktite or you may have another prob later on!. I don't think you need worry about a grease nipple, mine only seized up after much water and road crap and at the time had done about 40.000 miles. I Did have a similar problem before this but it just needed the linkage oiling.
