Plymouth-Santander ferry arrives at 1300hrs. Say max 2hrs to get out off the port and head west along the coast. Thinking of stopping either Gijon or Oviedo for one night B4 heading to Santiago de Compostela for two nights.

I don't see any campsite so, looking for a motel to book.
Any suggestions?

Ribadesella is a nice place although not as far along Gijon

The hostel Derli Sella ( in Ribadesella) is OK and reasonably priced for the area
You could use the shorter distance to head there the longer more scenic route rather than M way

My neighbour has a villa in Porto and has previously recommended a hotel in Salamanca, although may be a bit out of your way.

Hotel in Salamanca is the VINCCI CIUDAD, its a very short walk across the river into the plaza maynor. They have secure parking at €9 per night, half price to what we normally paid.

So avoiding Gijon & Oviedo then.
Ribadessella as mentioned not too far away for one night B4 heading to Santiago De Comp (campsite)
I will do some Googling this week. A quick look on booking.com showed hotels at cheap prices, especially as I am alone.

Ribadesella is genuinely lovely

Its like a spanish version of Filey - lovely harbour, great promenade to walk along and some great restaurants and bars

when are you going? Presumably when warmish with plenty of daylight if taking a tent. As you won't be getting dinner before 8pm, bear in mind you can get a lot more than 100 miles west!

Roberto Frasinelli youth hostel at Ribadesella has single beds from 27Euro right on the prom fantastic location.

If you arrive early in Ribadesella there are superb prehistoric cave paintings which are sometimes available to see at a site just out of town. Possibly free on weds..
If you want to go further along Aviles is a smaller town than Gijon or Oviedo. Has some architecture by the architect who designed Brasillia.

This little gem is in the basement of a hotel in Santilliana del mer, only half an hour out of Santander. You can have a good look round this collection you stay there. You could get there in time for lunch, don't know if that will count for a viewing...Posada Spa San Marcos.

I don't understand your saying there are no campsite. Almost every town along the coast has at least one!

But of you what something really special inland try the Camping Lagos de Somiedo, stay a few days and take some footwear for walking ...

fabulous area. It's in a great place to incorporate into any route heading SW from Santander. I will probably do this next May when returning from Salamanca to Santander as I have 6 nights to play with. No tents though.

No need as they have little 'bothy's to rent. I stayed in mid-July and still needed an extra blanket, luckily available to rent @ 0.50€ per night back in 2011 - absolute bargain at twice the price!

Cudillero is a gorgeous little town.
There is a campsite, just outside, but a hotel in the little port/bay is lovely.
