It looks like the Evil Stepdaughter is about to pass her car test.

Any pointers please on some good value companies to start approaching for quotes? Limited mileage, black boxes, what ever helps keep the premium down are all in the pot :)

With three young drivers in the household I've been round the track a few times on this one! :blast

Keep coming back to Diamond/Elephant/Bell/Admiral. All one and the same company. Each year I do a comparison website check and one or more of these companies are at the top. Been with Admiral most of the years - each time one of their sister-companies quote better I give Admiral the quote number, they check it out and then match the price!:D

It's worked well for me.

We went the other way with my 17YO son and got him a 1972 beetle, zero road tax, zero depreciation and insurance in his name for £350 - oh and its different :-)

The downside is MPG is only just over 30 and with 34 BHP when new its not exactly fast but apart from big hills easily keeps up with modern traffic.

Andres, my secretary's 17yo daughter has just passed her test and after hours of searching and website comparison trawling they went with Ingenie, https://www.ingenie.com/, £1500 for a 51 plate Mini One with a 1600cc petrol engine which didn't sound too bad in this day and age. Black box to be fitted and I'm told that the V5 needs to be in the name of the insured.

The Mini isn't exactly the cheapest way to get a new driver on the road.

Another vote for wearemarmalade.com

Saved a fortune for my then 17 year old son. Car in his name and us as named drivers.

Have a look at some new car deals with free insurance.
What you save on insurance goes a long way to meeting the payments, and you have the peace of mind that she's in a reliable car.

We already have the car but, on the face of it, that's looks really good if you want a new car.

That really IS cheap for that car  She sorted a good deal there, thanks :)

Cheers all, I'll report back once sorted.

I would caution getting a car that has no ABS or airbags! You have to acknowledge that these youngsters are far more likely to need them than us oldies!

I am haunted by a school friend who died at the age of eighteen when he 'upgraded' from his first mini to a Ford Capri 2.0S. The one in the black and gold JPS colours? About a year after his death I stumbled across his crashed car in a breakers yard. I was physically sick!

Airbags would probably have saved his life.

Both children with Admiral - just remember to shop around and phone them when the renewal comes through. Interestingly, black box option was more expensive!

Our cheapest by a long shot was LV. Have just renewed with them.

Out oldest is at Uni but the car stays here and LV will let us add him on a pay as you go basis during the holidays only. That saves a few hundred quid.

Youngest passed test 3 weeks ago and the premium for a Honda Jazz (achingly cool....) is well under a grand with no black box, so I won't get rumbled either.

cars have come a long way since the 70's, airbags and especially seatbelts are a big step forward in road safety, they would have saved a number of my year group at school.
When I was a lad, power was the biggest problem as I had a 2lt capri at 18, and a V8 SDI rover at 19, kids could just not get insurance on cars like that now. My sons beetle has 34 BHP, properly rebuilt brakes and suspension in addition to modern seatbelts and high back seats. Airbags would not add much to a beetle, due to the amount of steel between you and the point of impact but will admit that ABS would be a great addition.
