Hello - going to head for a week in Ireland in May, crossing to Larne and for my first trip I would like to try and do some of the south west coast if possible. What routes would you recommend to do in that time? Getting to/from that area from Larne will eat up some time. Trying to think how much of Kenmare up to Westport I could do, and not wanting to rush things. Main question I suppose is how to get there from Larne that's not just a slog? Any advice appreciated- thanks.

1st thing I would suggest, is to be as flexible as possible with regards to what area you wish to go to first. The weather can be very varied between regions, so a weather check just before you depart to decide which part has the best weather & start with there, of course if you book all your accommodation in advance, you will just have to go with it.
Route wise Larne to Kenmare, I would head for Belfast then take the Mourne Coastal route to Newry.
From Newry, you could head south along the Newry canal and take in Carlingford.
From Carlingford maybe just do a bit of motorway to Dublin, then the M50 to junction 12 and take the R113 & R115 into the Wicklow Mountains.
From here I would just set the sat nav for Kenmare
This is a wee link to a trip round Ireland a group of us did a while back - might assist

Some Advice here......you just need to reverse the route. What time are you landing at Larne??

You could do larne to Kenmare in two days. Three days to do Dingle, ring of Kerry and Beara and Two day's back up. I'd avoid the M50 and Dublin (unless you want to go to Dublin and instead go up/down the middle Via Tullamore/Mullingar, hit the M1 near Dundalk which would allow Carlingford/Cooley MTS and Mournes if you wish. i planned a trip from from Glasgow, Ive already done most of Donegal and the north, I think it worked out at 8 days, can send you the GPX files if you message me your email.

...re planning. Distances on signposts are kilometres. If you regard them as miles your timing will be better.

Host them on something like Dropbox and share them here, please.

We have GPX for our trip (video in post 2 above) if anyone wants. Also have a excel spreadsheet with accommodation and routes...

Yes please!
Hi Afmuir, I have sent the GPX's by DM...
These were the planning for the first 3 days:

After that we did the Ring of Beara, then down to Mizen Head (so we had done the most Northerly, and most Southerly points.
Molls Gap is an awesome road on the way back North:
Not my video BTW:

Hope this helps!

Nice route, wasn't me who asked but thanks. I will be in Glasgow on 25 for a couple of months. Hope to find a bike. While there's still loads of places in Scotland I've never been or had a good enough reason to go.
I've never been to Ireland, Its on our agenda. Figuring out a ferry trip on line not so easy hope to Do Stranraer Larne and possibly return to Wales cause I've never ridden there either. Be looking for cheep places to stay. Weather probably not great in April.

Over on the WAW again, but this time in the Camper with the Mrs....
Following most of the WAW.
Had to "wild camp" almost every night because many campsites don't open until April... Not a problem tho.
Have to say our favourite nights out so far have been Sneem and Dunfanaghy. Found lovely pubs and nice eateries in both ...
Currently on Ring of Beara, and heading over Molls Gap to Killarney today
Weather has been excellent, woke up to another gorgeous morning
Last night sunset:
