First trip in Germany, advice pls

Due to my wife having an adverse result on a routine blood test in May we had to cancel our 6 week tour of Greece 3 days before we were due to leave. However, it turned out to be not as bad as initially feared and we can now get away for 7-10 days after the schools go back in September.

So, having never (I hold my head in shame) toured Germany I’d like to give it a go.

2-up on an RT, been touring for many years, speak absolutely no German, generally ride 4-5 hours plus breaks daily, I enjoy the ride and my wife enjoys the sights. Don’t need posh hotels so whatever the equivalent of Ibis budget/B&B chain is good.

All and any suggestions of places and routes readily appreciated Gentlemen…

Don't do too much....Blue beat me to it....The area around the Eifel is superb...perhaps couple it with a night or two in Luxembourg City which is lovely?
This is a superb hotel (Micky is/was a regular there and will attest to how good it is).

Out in the sticks, but only a 20 minute pleasant ride to the sights and sounds of the Nurburgring for a bit of variety.

Germany is a big country but, in reality is not very far away. Or, at least some of it isn’t.

How long do you plan to be away for, between touching down on the continental mainland and sailing / training away again, back to the UK?

You apparently hang your hat in West Sussex. I guess you’ll use the Chunnel or a ferry from Dover? But hey, you might be following advice on theses page and crossing from Hull. Who knows?

As to Germany itself, I’ve ‘dun’ (to use the vernacular) anything between a lap of the entire border edges, to (just this weekend) four nights in an area no bigger than 140 sq km…. And I didn’t see every square metre….. only a few minutes from the Belgian border.

10 days door to door, and we use the Chunnel departing on the 6.30am-ish train, returning back in the UK at about 6.30pm with a 2hr run home.

As above, lots to see. I’ve been a few times, always choosing a few specific places to visit.

Across on N Sea ferry so through Netherlands, into Germany, on to Austria, Belgium, even skipped in and out of Italy.

Museums (war, cars, trains, planes), war memorials. Race tracks, Hockenheim, Nurburgring, Spa.

But the most fun is on the roads. Sweeping countryside, Grossglockner and all the others passes down south.

Munich for the BMW museum and the world’s biggest pub, allegedly. The Grossglockner, best Apple strudel ever, Neuschwanstein Castle for the largest folly.
If you have time, I enjoyed a tour of colditz some three years ago, then rode up to Berlin. First time there since the wall came down.

I think wherever you go you’ll meet friendly people and have a good time, plus the beer is good.

They seemed happy enough accepting mine.

I was though sensible enough when using it, I hope. For many small enterprises in the UK, they are reluctant to accept a card for transactions under a fiver. I upped this to euro 10 abroad; above that figure most places are happy enough. Supermarkets, don’t care at any size of transaction.

I did wonder when, it was only a matter of time.

Lovely part of the world, and not massively far from the shore of a murky ditch.
Can be done in one long day, via the motorway networks.

Travel to Freiburg which is the capital of the Black Forest….
Stay in or near by and tour the Black Forest…cruise over to the Vosges and along the Route de Crete…
Have a go at Lake Constance across the BF close to Switzerland, see the Rhinefall..
Nice accommodation in and near Freiburg…lively University city ,
Lots to do and see and very nice food…
Avoid the B500 which is the most overrated road I know….limited now to 50 km/h
Freiburg up the Schauinsland…Notschrei…Feldberg…the Blechen ..Tittisee..Name bar a few of the roads
and places I traveled so many times when I lived there…
