Those are the times of sailing when we crossed three and one weeks ago.

A bit late for it, but I strongly recommend all biker mates get a dongle that pays the tolls electronically on French autoroute barriers, such as the emovis tag that you pay easily here in UK:

Better than the faff with gloves, cash, credit cards, toll tickets etc whilst the queue of Irate motorists builds behind you, not to mention the time wasted at each barrier.

Last week a fair bit of time was wasted waiting for two riders in our group of five that didn’t have one, not to mention the sweating our nuts off in full blazing sun.

Don’t use the lanes with height restrictions or you get billed as a car !

Or stay off toll roads . Didn’t even take my tag on recent trip.

That possibly depends on your starting point, how many in the group and how far you need to ride to get to the good stuff Martin ?

With only about ten days of riding holiday and all the good stuff about two days ride away from Calais, our group tends to smash out the distance quickly to buy us enough time to enjoy the better roads.

I’ve done the alternative way and it works, but when “herding cats” the autoroute seems to win. If I was riding solo I’d take the road less travelled.

if doing a long motorway schlep, the best thing is to pre-agree a stop such as a service area based on the bike with the shortest fuel range or your overnight stop. My regular group tends to do the latter on major transit days from one base to another, especially if we are more than 3 bikes.

that way, you do not have to wait in the blazing sun at the toll rest area, anyone needing a piss or smoke can pull off into an aire and people can ride at a speed they find comfortable rather than riding too fast to catch up because they got stuck behind a truck overtaking another truck on a hill at 45mph. For those riding ahead at pace, they get to rest in a dry or air conditioned service area with a coffee or cold drink

I envy you doing your jaunt. Done a few trips and always take camping gear .I think every town in France has a municipal campsite most are good but if you’re only there for one night it doesn’t matter . Loads of cheap hotels in both France and Germany ,winging it is part of the adventure .
As for booking your return I booked my train from a service station about an hour from the terminal with no problem .I think if you just roll up you will pay a bit more .

There are so many good roads in the Eifel I would forget the Black Forest on this trip. The Eifel/Hunsrück-Hochwald has it all, like this: Marvellous Route
Join us in Cochem :)
Take yer waterproofs :D
Thanks for this route Redboots - I used it today after adding Cochem to the loop. Fantastic variety of roads. The odd closed road which I managed to navigate without toi much bother. A few bits of rain but still fabulous.

If anyone has any suggestions for a route tomorrow from Cochem or nearby, be grateful if you could chuck them on this thread. Thanks.

Doc is not in the Irish bar
Good job i don't know anyone in Cochem. 😅
