Anyone up for a bike trip for fishing? I go bass fishing, but I also hanker after a few gilthead bream this year. I do some fly fishing for bass, and lure.

West Wales, near Towyn. There is a good campsite - flat ground. And a range of opportunities for fishing depending on the wind and sea conditions. GLORIOUS roads too, including the iconic Barmouth viaduct (note rods on back on bike!)









I suggest July as a good time to get amongst some fish.

I ride around the Isle of Skye with my fly rod. Easy to park in lots of places close to lochs and rivers, cutting down on walking and therefore increasing fishing time.

I could be up for that- Tywyn is about 2 hours away for me- I do like that area, we (the Mrs) go there a lot, particularly in summer on the GS. I’ve got a 5 piece fly rod which is easy to carry- not sure about my other kit and how easy it would be to stow on the bike (2 piece rods).
Can you get far enough out with a 5 weight fly rod?

Sorry, not mean't to be a thread hijack but more of a fishing add on. For those that have ever fished or still fish at Patshull Park, Nr Albrighton, Wolverhampton. I just popped by yesterday to go for a cuppa and see what's going on, only to find a coded security gate, so chased it up online to find it's been taken over by RH Fisheries and they're turning one of the lakes into a mega Carp Lake. Looks like they're putting in some graft and turning it into a corporate fishing venue, not sure how the prices will rise or what the variety of fish will be left in other pools. Reading some of the comments it becomes quite interesting of what some think of it, loading one of the lakes with so much carp it seems to take the competition or the enjoyment out of it. Patshull needed some investment but in realty I think we prefer that nature has its way too.

Shame, good natural lakes (or well established man made ones) with a range of native species are becomming harder to find. Seems the modern angler is only interested in overstocked commmercials.

To get back on thread, combining a bike ride with a bit of fishing is something I'd been planning to do this year. A compact telescopic rod, 8ft extended, and lures, spinners. Upper Severn, Mawddach, Dysynni or Dyfi estuaries.
Bring on summer!

Yes Symon. I have been saltwater fly fishing since the late 70s.

My sister lives at Camus More, north of Trotternish Peninsular. They have a Loch under the hill about 2 miles inland of them. I would be up for a Scottish trip too.

2-piece in a tube sticking upright. I carry my 2 piece 1wt like this.

Do you buy specific salt water fly fishing tackle?

I do have saltwater rods/reels yes but for the occasional trip reservoir gear is perfectly adequate, just take precautions beforehand. A wipe with GT85 or ACF50 soaked cloth on reel parts, reel seat and rings. Wash with fresh water at the bike.

For those asking A 6wt is quite good for estuaries and washable reef fishing. An 8wt is better and enables 30 yard casts with 5-6" flies on 2/0 hooks. Sandeel flies are less bulky and can be punched out on the 6wt as can prawn or shrimp suggestions and small baitfish patterns.

That would be fantastic. Do you or that other whisky swilling Laird of the Hills have any contacts on the Uists for a trout trip - I have a feeling some of those sandy sealochs will have bass in them. I caught bass at Durness on my first visit.

There are three lochs up the glen but the second two are after a decent river crossing. First loch is fine, brown trout and Arctic char

That would be a first for me. I have never seen a char, let alone caught one. I heard they are the Garry system and used to get caught late season travelling between the two lochs, but now that migration takes place after the season closes. I have tried in the lake District in the spring, but never got one.
