Hi,

I was helping a friend fit a centrestand to his Transalp last night and we were unable to extend the spring enough to hook it over the catch where it's supposed to sit.

I tried all kinds of elaborate levers using the limited selection of tools that I had but I couldn't pull it with enough force to fit it!! AAARRRRRGGGGHHHH

Suggestions?

Any help appreciated.

fit the spring, and then lever the stand into position to get the pivot bolts in.

Get a wire coat hanger, straighten it out and then put a 180degree bend in the end of it,hook the spring over the end and you can stretch the spring as far as you like. :thumb

If no coat hanger, thin electric cable works. Tie into approx 12" dia loop. Wear gloves.

Some people put coins/washers, as spacers between the coiled spring loops - to stretch the spring.

Never tried it myself - so don't know if it works...........

Nylon string works well too. Double it up, loop over spring hook, wrap loose end around suitable piece of wood to act as a hand hold and pull like buggery :thumb
Wear gloves.
Good advice!

All good suggestions, the coat-hanger being the favourite at the moment :)

Thanks to all, I'll try it later and let you know how I get on.

IME the trouble with pulling the spring on, is that the tool or hook you use, ends up getting in the way of what you need to hook onto.

also you often have very limited room for manouvre under a bike.

just my 2p

coathanger hook and tighten it in to chuck of electric drill. Easy for car brake shoe springs as well.Drill body gives huge pulling power :thumb

Mission completed.

He went out and bought a length of steel high tensile wire at lunchtime and we just fitted the two springs.

Only problem now is that the fingers on one of my hands are about 1cm longer than the other after pulling so f*cking hard :)

Great suggestions anyway, worked a treat.

Thanks again

David

FWIW

I have successfully used the 2p method on the centrestand spring off my aged Goldwing. Put one end in a vice, bend spring, insert 2p, bend the other way, insert 2p, repeat until long enough, hook it up and put bike on stand, small shower of 2p's, job done !

ps - no need for gloves

I use one of the ratchet type luggage staps, one end to the swing arm (old transalp), other end to thin wire linked to end of spring. Jack spring into place by tensioning strap, then snip wire and 'ping', it all snaps into place (usually) :thumb

since this thread refuses to die, i'd just like to say that my method worked great for fitting a new side stand on my oilhead today :)

I know what you mean.........it`s going on FOREVER...... :D

Oh yeah....'your' method is the way I`ve always done it.....and is the 'recommended way'.

The others are just recipies for skinned knuckles and eyeballs pierced by bits of wire.....
