has anyone done it? not much slack on the cables or room to play with
tips on where to run the cables or to place the ballast would be welcomed
bike is an r1150rt from 2004 (but it looks like the one from 2003)
got it yesterday as my own 40's bday present :)

Did one last month on a friends 2003 1150RT,replaced the dip bulb.

There is not a lot of space to get you hand in to the the bulb socket and I had to drill a hole in the plastic clip on bulb cover to get space for the burner wiring,I seem to remember the ballast being quite easily to securely zip tie to the fairing bracket.

The biggest problem was getting the headlight beam aligned properly we just could not get it to dip low enough.

His bike failed its MOT due to the HID and I had to remove the burner and replace the bulb for the re-sit but left the ballast in place, then re-fit it again after the MOT,very fiddly!

A week later he went touring to Russia and crashed into a moose writing off the bike, fortunately he was not badly hurt and now has a 1200RT.
Sent home for salvage, they gave him £3200.

HID's

Stick it under the beak, you always have to drill a 25mm hole in the light cover
to fit, if you find the beam is that high make sure the ball and socket joint
is home correctly because that sounds as though something is wrong. Why did it fail the mot? just because of an hid?, mine has always passed no probs I would follow this up with a appeal as It doesent sound correct to me.

Easy to fit, I fitted the ballast under the beak on the cross member, Good to keep it away from the display panel as it can sometimes interfere with the display. It also keeps it cool. I fitted the ignitor box on the frame bracket that is bolted under the ignition switch and runs forward to the fairing. Just plug into the existing bulb wiring. Hardest bit is to cover the wiring with black harness tape to cover the red wires on my kit. A couple of zippy ties and you are done. About 1 hour. if you take your time.
I marked the existing beam on the garage door and made sure the new HID light pattern matched the original once fitted.

Keep the existing bulb on the bike in case you have a HID failure, its a 5 minute job to replace the original bulb.

As the HID bulbs take a few seconds to warm up I believe they are only suitable for the dip beam. Nice touch is to get a LED bulb for the pilot so the light colour is the same as the HID.

sorry to hijack the thread, but wondering does a HID make a big differance on the R1150RT?
Thinking of fitting a HID for the Dipped light, what has peoples experiance been? and did people go for the 50w or 35w?
