Fitting a larger Left Hand Pannier, how?

I want to fit a larger left hand (exhaust side) BMW system pannier to my GS1150. I understand I will need to use a stubby (+cat), but I also seem to recall the lower pannier footrest mount requires modification. Ive done varius searches, as Im sure it has been covered before, but to no avail. Can anybody point me in the right direction please?

Wunderlich do an exhaust lowering kit that has the brackets to do the required thing, but TBH you'd be better off making them up yourself......using Ebay for parts like exhaust hangers and bushes, brackets etc, you can make a fairly good job of it for around 30 quid rather than the well over 100 (dunno, years since I got mine) that Wunderlich's kit is.

That means you can run the OEM can, or a remus or whatever., UNDER the pannier, which you attach to the foot rest hanger with again, some simple home made brackets, or kit brackets off ebay.

If you want to run just a stubby BTW, you'll need to put the cat box back in, or it's just stupidly loud.

I've had variations of all of the above on mine over the years....I'll see if I can dig out some pics later

EDIT...Here we go, one variation I've used.....

Remus mounted INSIDE the face of a left hand Vernatech pannier.....the extension on the 'zorst was to take the hot air out the back so it didn't heat the pannier.

The odd looking bracket ho0lding the can to the pannier rail is part of the original Wudo kit that Wundelich supply, but it was handy and I made it fit here.

PS This was taken while I was fitting it, so the pillion footrest isn't back on.

In this pic, the panniers are back on (durr) and you can see the front bracketry..... mounted to the footrest hanger then to the front lower face of the pannier to mount it.

Ignore my markings on the piccy......I was working something out for another idea

With a bit of messing around, making some cardboard templates or just collecting up any brackets you have laying around, it's not hard to do a really good bodge that's perfectly safe and MOT friendly......anything inelegant will be hidden behind the pannier as well.

Fit a stubby, they sound great.

Buy 2 small drawer handles and securely fit them higher on the RT pannier to sit over the original piece on your bike.

Mine has not moved in over 2 years riding plenty rough roads. Pannier lives on bike.

So weigh up the cost of a stubby pipe, £20. Against the cost of an exhaust from an RT/RS, approx £250 for a used item, if you can find one.

And then you'll get to the major flaw in your suggestion - the balance box/silencer on an RT/RS only has one connection pipe as the RT/RS models have a two into one downpipe.
And don't think about just fitting RT/RS down pipes as they have three bolts at each cylinder head, the GS has two.
So you'll need to change the cylinder heads as well.

I'm sticking with the system cases so Sleepys option looks good, but appreciate the pics Fanum as it shows its easily do-able with a bit of thought, carboard templates and some ally bar. As Steptoe points out, the stubby is a cheaper option and I already have one so that's the way to go.

Cheers Sleepy, that looks great. The original pannier is pretty small. I take it any of the oilhead R series large panniers will fit?

You can keep your original lid, hinges, and locking mechanism, and buy a large 'back' and hinge rivet kit from Motorworks or Moto-bins..

Or just fit bigger BMW OEM pannier lids, to gain an extra 6l capacity per side

BMW sell them to fit the system Panniers, they're called BMW Global Lids, about £160 a pair - from your BMW Dealer or Motorworks

No faffing then

1150R has the same set up as a GS. So you'll still need a bracket to attach the lower mount on an RT pannier.
On the R and the GS the pannier mounts on the footrest.
The larger pannier from an RT mounts further out, and can't be used on an R or GS footrest with a form of bracket being used.

Keep it simple, removce end can , fit stubbie and bolt a couple of those plastic blocks that you use for flatpack furniture to the larger pannier. I have been using this set up on my R1150R for a few years now, never had a problem.
