Fitting a non GS aftermarket can….

Mate of mine has given me an akrapovic can from an SP1 – just the left can. I’ve sized it up against my 1150GS today and have the following problems:

(1) Diameter of can is much larger than diameter of Y piece
(2) No hanging bracket

Anyone got any ideas how I can sort this? I guess I’m going to need some kind of sleeve on the can to reduce the diameter – where can I buy something like this from? Also, where can I get an exhaust hanging bracket that will fit both the can and the bike?

I can use a set of spanners but I certainly can’t fabricate anything so I’m going to need to buy this stuff from somewhere. Any ideas?

Find an exhaust specialist in your Yellow Pages, (maybe the ones who make custom build stainless systems?), they should sort you out with a sleeve.

The hanger you should be able to source from one of the many suppliers of custom parts in the small ads of most motorbike nags or even Motorcycle News.

I would approach my local exhaust specialist or fitters.
I know they do cars rather than bikes but they have to make up hangers for cars with broken exhaust straps and may well have bands and seals suitable to help you out.
It will probably not look very pretty though - functional but not pretty.

If they get welding kit out I would run away quick as bike exhausts often do not respond well to anything but the most expert of welding.

You will almost certainly find that the arkro is noisier but there is actually less power. I have no expertise in this area apart from what others have told me when fitting nonspecific exhausts to their bikes.

You could also try a small, local engineering workshop. Near to me is a one-man band engineering business who also happens to be an ex-scrambler - he still runs a classic BSA scrambler. Whenever I need anything fabricated I use him, he is cheap and of course I get to listen to all his old scrambling war stories
