Fitting a Peli case ......

I've been asked by a customer to fit a Peli 1520 box to the rear rack of his R12GSA.

Naturally I can drill a few holes, fit a couple of spacers etc etc but I was wondering if any of you guys had found an elegant solution to enable the box to be removed easily?

(I've tried the search function but it's gone tits up!)

I fitted rivnuts to a Stahlkoffer rack and drilled matching holes in the Peli case to bolt it down. Not exactly quick release but only needed an allen key to remove and took less than a minute.

I have a few of these , made from 5mm flat bar , Bolts direct to the Rear Luggage rack , you could take it from there.

How about Dzus fasteners from inside the case into P brackets around the carrier frame

I bet a couple of decent Neodynium magnets would do the job......no drilling then either, just expoxy them on to the bottom of the box

Just out of idle interest, I looked up Neodynium magnets to see what sort of strengths they come in at what cost.......

I honestly think it could be viable ya know.......

Just the first site that Google throws up, so no attempt to find how cheap they could go, but THESE are rated for 25kg of pull........That is flush on a contact surface though, so let's imagine there's a plastic or aluminium sheet that the top box or pannier sits on........The magnets could be on the underside of the box, or a steel pad could be epoxied to the corners with the magnets remaining on the bike rack

4 of those, one at each corner, and it'd take 100KG of vertical force (let's say 75kg as we've ferked about with the distances a little )

It would still be removable easily though, by twisting the case on a horizontal plane then lifting it


EDIT....4 of those come out at about 50 quid (and that was first result, so probably available a lot cheaper)

So 50-60 quid including a couple of tubes of Araldite and a few Steel pucks.......and you have an almost invisible but immensely strong quick release top box system

Just don't put your laptop in the topbox

The tank bag i use on the Hardley has Magnets ... and thats all to hold it on... works fine... even with 80mph showing on the speedo...... (Gets a bit hairy for me above 70 on that thing so its a rare day..)

you have to "peel" the flaps off when you want to remove it.. and be very careful when popping it on as it goes with quite a clunk....

I have never seen a person walking along a row of bikes giving all the luggage on each of them a good tug in case they are held on by a magnet

Something like ghost brackets which are used to put panniers onto bikes usually harleys

Years ago I mounted a 1450 to an 1100 Gs using a Touratech locking top box plate.... not cheap but it didn't half look good

Watch out for scratchy screws stuck to your magnetic tank bag, though they wont hurt the paint on GS/A.

You're right...they'd just screwdriver the lock....and accidentally detach the case in the process.

Look on Twisted Steel,s web site, they do a quick release system g
For peli cases. Works a treat.
