Done that today to a 2008 GS, so a heads up for anyone doing the same thing. The instructions are written by someone who is German but speaks English and as a result they arent clear at all. Not Jinglish as the Japs do but Kringlish from a Kraut.

Anyway, you do not need to remove the luggage rack and then the luggage grid as the written instructions suggest because the cut outs for the top box support are moulded into the grid already, unlike on older model years. So its a simple bolt on job and not a remove existing bits , curse , and then refit existing bits before adding the new top box support as I did.

So the moral of your story is to read and understand the instructions BEFORE starting the job.

Actually, all the time. Having learnt the hard way. As the OP is finding out...

I'm time short and I find it quicker to understand a job before starting it.

It looks to me like the OP did read the instructions and he understood what they said. However they told him was making more work than needed.

TBH if its the little Touratech/BMW rack its pretty obvious without any instructions., but what do I know. Ive just spent all afternoon putting a mesh guard in front of the oil cooler when for £20 I could have bought a cover and fitted it in minutes (probably)

No. Quite the reverse. The moral of my story is to ignore the instructions which tell you to take the bike rack to bits and just fit the part without dissembling anything.

And never mind "read the instructions" how about reading the post? :D:D
