Fitting A Zumo 660

IMHO: Just wire a fused connection direct to the battery and save the cost of CanBus connector.

Run cable from battery, along left side of bike, under the little panel that just pulls off, and along the horizontal telelever, using zip ties along the way. Then at a suitable point you can go up to the GPS mounting point, using more zip ties. Its a 5 minute job when you know what you are doing - I did mine at the dealers before I rode my bike for the first time, but then I'd done it before a few times.

Would also recommend the Touratech mount as its lockable, making short periods away from the bike more convenient as you don't need to remove the GPS unit.

My GPS is mounted at the highest point on the bike, to minimise the eye-wandering required.

Worth considering the Wunderlich handlebar bag too. I have wired up a cigarette lighter socket for charging my phone. Touratech also do a handlebar bag but the Wunderlich one is more robust IMHO and has more pockets, and pre-made hole for power lead etc.

I went the Canbus route in the end

...and gave her a good fettle!

You might experience a slight problem when wiring direct to the battery. As the mount remains on the bike, the pins that connect power to the GPS when fitted will remain live whatever the ignition state. If the pins get damp or dirty, you may get a build up of a greenish substance that will corrode the terminals and eventually force you to replace the mount. I experienced this on a 2720 fit - the power pins on the connecting cable corroded on 3 different cables over the period it was fitted.

Remember that the headstock plug contains 3 wires - if you get the wrong ones then you may get the 30 secs on 30 secs off sequence reported by some. Once connected correctly, I have never experienced any problems with the connectors - absolutely ideal way to connect the GPS - thats what it was designed and installed for.

You make a good point about the green electrical corrosion. *It was quit prevalent on my hard wired always on connector for my Garmin 2610. *But it scraped off easily.*

However I have had my Zumo 660 hard wired and always on for two and a half years and no sign of any corrosion. *

IMHO wiring to battery is so easy and troublefree so you don't need to spend ££ on a cable that is not needed. * Each to their own.*

Used the canbus connector from nippy norman`s to wire into the canbus under the beak.
Bought the bmw bracket to fit to the screen cross bar, then use the zummo fitting kit, happy chappy.

Any pics???

Thinking of moving mine up above the clocks using the BMW support bar, but wasn't sure if I'd be able to use my TT V2 mount. I also have the MM screen.

Chaps, the bike turned up on Friday and I'm over the moon, she's a big old girl, bigger than I remember. I've bought the canbus connector for the Zumo from NN's where abouts am I looking for the connector in the loom? Cheers

You should find it underneath the oil cooler with a blanking plug inserted ;)

Gloucestershire eh! I'm in Glos too, near Tewkesbury.

I connected my 660 tonight to the canbus having done the soldering along the way so if you need a hand just let me know as more than happy to help :beerjug:

Wunderlich... got it from Nippy Normans.

Thanks, Just ordered one.

MY 660 and Autocom are both wired to the back of the aux socket under the seat. Autocom is where the tool roll goes, and wires to the Zumo run inside the L/H tank trim panels. To mount the zumo, just use the supplied brackets, mounted to the windscreen bar, just infront of the speedo.

If you look at the wires very carefully you'll notice they have numbers stamped on - 1, 2 & 3. The NN instructions tell you which wire is +ve, -ve etc.

Stu.

Another plus for using the canbus connector system, fitted a zumo 660 to my GSA last year, Touratech lockable mounting, canbus connector from my local BMW dealer (don't know why some won't sell, phone around), no messing with wires, just plugs into canbus back of oil cooler (look at threads someone posted pictures of how to do this), zumo will turn on automatically when bike starts and shut down (after confirming ok) when ignition turned off.

BMW Canbus connector for hard wire sat nav

Just ordered mine from local BMW dealer ( WOLLASTON MOTORS , NORTHAMPTON )
Part No C83 30 0 413 585 £10 delivered :clap

When mine is conneted to the headstock connector it would never stay on longer than 30 seconds, then after a couple of minutes come back on then 30 seconds later off and so on.......so now straight to the battery ... :D

That's typical of an old faulty software (firmware)update BMW made to early bikes in their repeated attempts to get thing right (which they eventually did after a few years, around 2007 IIRC). Maybe your bike needs a firmware update?? If you still have the early firmware, your dealer should be able to update it to solve the accessory socket and auxiliary power switching on/off/on via CANBUS.

I took a feed from the back of the aux socket to power the solinoid of a relay that switches on power from the battery to feed all my ancil electrics via fuses. That way canbus switches the power off when the bikes ignition is off and the current draw doesn't exceed the canbus 5 amp limit through the aux socket. I am running satnav, heated gloves and spot lights, as ancil electrics. I've also fitted switches to control each item individually. I use a waterproof plug fitted behind the clocks to connect the satnav. The whole lot cost less than £12.

I originally used the plug behind the oil cooler. However, when I fitted HIDs I got a whining noise. I already had an additional fuse box fitted. Taking the supply from there fixed it.
Made my own bracket.
