fitting an endcan: use paste, sealant or nothing at all

Just about to fit a carbon Remus endcan and I was wondering what's the best way to fit it to the Y-piece: some sort of exhaust paste e.g. Gun Gum, silicon sealer (see quote from Arakapovic on Nippy Normans)

"If it is a new system, generally it will seal after the first few runs otherwise normal clear silicon bath sealer (really! - as used by all the race teams) can be used to seal any air leaks."

or just to have metal to metal seal.

On bike no three now another 1150 ( previous 1100 and 1150 ) hand on heart never used any sealer at all, thats with remus y-piece, end cans and combination of std and after market cans...... some swear by silicone sealer but alot depends on the amount of popping and banging on the overun and if you can live with it, personally I'd try with out and see how it goes.
 
I use 'proper' high hysterisis silicone.....not the cheapo acrylic crap.
 
Erm, if the system is designed properly there should be no need for sealant.
 
I guess there's no need for the Gun Gum stuff then.

Shuck Raider, you said you got "B&Q's best...", this their everyday bathroom sealer then? My girlfriend just bought some yesterday to seal a vase she made; should be able to use that if need be.

Ahem..................we use it in work,nudge nudge.......but you can get it from Wilkinsons and B&Q etc, just read the labels on the tubes....it`s usually the stuff around £5 to £6 odd rather than £2 to £ 3.......alternatively go to an aquarium stockist and get some 'fishtank silicone sealant'.....I fixed a CB900F camcover leak with some of that. :thumb
 
where did you pick up your high hysterisis silicone?

window glazers use it these days instead of putty :thumb
 
If you have to use a silicone sealant for exhaust check the temperature range with the manufacture, the best i have seen is about 250 c in spikes check the loctite or 3 M sites for data sheets , i am not aware of any automotive use on exhausts
Dont whatever you do use it on the Y piece upstream of the Lamda sensor
silicone can / will poisen the Lamda ( google it )
cheap sh*t B&Q bathroom, amine cure sealers ( smells like vinegar ) should not be confussed with automotive grade sealers.

Cheers, I wasn't planning on using it on the Y, that's already on, just got the endcan to add on the end.

Yeah the cheap stuff cures with Acetic acid, therefore the Vinegar smell. A contractor in a neighbouring African state here installed all the electronics boxes for a telecom system using the cheap stuff (nothing else available there). 6 months later all the boxes were scrap, big insurance claim, the acetic acid had corroded all the electronic boards etc.
