Well, it's a squeeze.
To save you the grief...

1. Remove the expanded polystyrene spacer under the original battery.

2. Remove all the fins from the positive end of the battery.

3. Remove the fins directly below the negative terminal.

4. Remove the angle plates fitted to the battery. You might just be able to manage without doing this.

5. Secure the positive terminal.

6. "Gently ease" (Haynes manual speak) the battery into place.

7. Have a fight with the end cover getting it back into place.

Great post :thumb I did the same a year ago but was too stupid to post it :blast

I actually took a hacksaw to my fins, bit prehistoric but it actually worked! Got photos if anyone needs them (doubt it) but in addition to the above just clamp the battery before you start hacking away eh? :thumb2 (personal experience........)

Am I missing a trick here, what’s wrong with fitting the correct OEM battery?

I did that on my hexhead, didn't notice any real improvement, use motobatt on my last two battery replacements, they seem good value for money, may swap to Li-on for the next one.

On all my previous GSs I fitted an odyssey battery after about a year. The odyssey always made the bike crank faster and start easier particularly after a restart when hot (or stalled) but I have had no complaints with the standard battery in the LC. It starts easily and is never sluggish even after 3 years. I’ve never even had to put it on a battery tender even if I was away for a few weeks.

Most decent quality lead acid batteries will sit unused and still work fine. But there will be a build up of hard sulphate that reduces battery life.

The odessey will fit without trimming the fins. But it’s complete overkill and a waste of money (IMO).
My much smaller Lithium does a fine job for 1/2 the money and 1/5 of the weight.

I think they're there to allow some air circulation for cooling. Probably in other applications where they're in a confined space.
My original battery gave up the ghost. Just under four years old. Been impressed with Odyssey batteries in the past so dug deep again.
Maybe my bike is different but there was no way it would have fitted without removing the fins. Especially at the positive end as there was no room for the cable.
