Fitting an Ohlins shock to the front of an '03 1150GSA

Has anyone done this?

I've been told I have to remove the crash bars from the bike first to get the front shock in.

Is this true?

Not Ohlins but the same process applies I assume, tank needs to come back a bit to get to the top bolt if memory serves me right but that's about it for moving bits about.

Whether the crash bars need to come off depends on what crash bars you have, but for most of the ones I've seen, they can stay on. You just need clear access to the lower nut and bolt on the tele lever and clear access to the bolt on top. I find it easier to remove the fuel tank outright. Make sure you use a hex key on the upper shaft of the shock to keep it from spinning when you undo the upper bolt. You'll need to do the same when you tighten the upper bolt for the new shock.

I got hepco and becker bars and managed to fit front shock without having to remove them.

Yep, with standard Adv bars just slide back the fuel tank or remove completely. And as per above to remove/ re-fit

Shocks being serviced at the moment and hopefully fitted next week - without taking off the crash bars!
